We've all seen them, we've all heard about how the city puts these Red Light cameras in 'just to make money', well in Frisco as of midnight tonight (May 26) Frisco will no longer monitor its 2 red light cameras.  It seems the contract with the monitoring company - Redflex Traffic Systems has run out, and Frisco is not going to be renewing it.  The state of Texas is currently considering outlawing red light cameras and Frisco wants to wait and see if that happens before they sign any new contract.  According to a news piece by NBC Channel 5 - "Frisco puts the brakes on red light cameras" Frisco didn't make money on the camera system, but they state that the number of accidents did decrease dramatically - from near 800 at its peak down to around 100 per month - thats pretty amazing!  Personally I really don't like having some in human camera system sending out tickets to people, but it is hard to argue with the results if they are responsible for the drop in accidents!

5 Comments on Frisco Texas is stopping with red light cameras

Hi Brian and Marie,

In Maryland we've had red light camera's for quite a while.  Virginia voted them out about four years ago for the same reasons you stated . . . increased accidents and rear-endings (although I don't know who was actually getting rear-ended in that deal).

Back to Maryland . . . they just voted in speed camera's which I would think are constitutionally illegal.  The owner of the vehicle gets ticketed and threatened with suspension when the owner may not have even been driving.  You don't get a chance to face your accuser unless, of course, you drive back down to the jurisdiction that issued the ticket, to fight it in court.

I really hope Maryland follows suit with Texas, but I seriously doubt they will.  They are grappling for every source of funding they can get.

Bonnie - Richard - Thanks for stopping by!  I don't like the idea of being monitored by some dumb machine either!  We'll see what the Texas legislature does about it - could be interesting!

I had not heard that Texas was thinking about getting rid of them.  There was a huge story on the news last week here in Austin about all the cops that are caught on camera, but no mention of them potentially going away.

Donna - sometimes you might get a ticket if you stop past the painted white line in the road with these cameras - thats running a red light?  I was glad to hear they are considering what to do about them!
