CogIn developing a real estate business you need to have your identity stand out. We all need to know we are unique but EMPHASIZE that uniqueness to the world.

Don't Be Just Another Cog In The Wheel.

Your special talents need to come forth. Brand yourself by your specialty. This can be done by Realtors, Stagers, or even Title Companies and Lenders. Find a way to advertise the area or type of clientele you serve. No one wants to be a run of the mill cog. Oh you are one of "those" Realtors who just puts a sign in the yard. No, they want to know you are the Kalamazoo lady or the N. Atlanta short sale guru. I think your colorful self looks mighty good against those grey guys.

People tell me that I am not the normal agent. I state that my wife says the same thing about me. I agree with your post. People are searching for answers. I just got a CPA on my team to answer the 1099 questions coming at the first of the year for people who did short sales and foreclosures. One must stay ahead of the curve.

Gary:  As I was reading your post, several associates came to mine and made me think about how they differentiate themselves and stand out.  Just like the houses we try to sell, they must stand out from the competition.  Being another cookie cutter with nothing extraordinary to offer just doesn't sell, whether a house or a person.  Also, Larua above - learn from the experience and then back up and punt.  I think we've all been there in some form or fashion but there's always something of value to be learned and applied to the next experience in life.

That's why I'm Your Fair Oaks Realtor.... YourFairOaksRealtor.com is my outside blog.  I've had doubts about whether it will limit me to people only wanting Fair Oaks, since I sell ALL over Sacramento, but it has seemed to work pretty well over 20+ years.  it certainly makes it easier to get referrals from within my company of 900 agents - they think of me when they have someone for Fair Oaks.  I just read another realtor Brigita? who writes about horse stuff - that's her niche.  She had someone approach her and say they know her because of her blogging, which they have been following.  Horses are her niche.

Hi Gary..Picking a speciality and niche to target to and build your brand is definitely something worth working on. People will start to recognize you as the expert in that area and come to you first.

Hi Gary, That is a reat photo of a Cog. Your readers and those that comment are miles ahead of most in the industry. Anne Rains says it best except if my may I would chage the word first to last. My clients may not come to me first but they do come to me last ( as in the last time they ever have to select one a REALTOR.  :-)

Since an agent left us that possessively specialized in Land Park, Curtis Park and East Sacramento, I decided to become the expert people want to call. That was almost 3 years ago.  It has taken diligence, hard work and consistency, but it is just now starting to pay off.  I too worried about losing business, but these are the areas I want to work anyway, so that is ok.

Regarding the brand yourself blog-I purchased shirts that would differentiate myself and another agent said I want that shirt-I replied there is a catalog of 2000 choices you can pick one to brand yourself with and embroider what you want--maybe they thought copying was branding?

 Thanks, great advice. I am in the process of reading a book "The Brand Called You" and it is awesome.

My favorite quote is this: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." - Maya Angelou

A large part of branding is the service you provide and caring will brand you all by it self.
