When you are running a WordPress Multiple User (Mu) blogfarm, you have two flavors of spam attacks to deal with.

Comment spam, which I tackled over here...  Comment spam affects both single user WordPress.org and Multiple User Wordpress Mu ...

SPLOGGER sign-ups are a Mu specific problem.  Slogger bots sign up and join your Mu network, and create spam blogs in your community....

This morning, while browsing the web looking for solutions to the most recent round of splogger sign ups, I came across this technique from D'Arcy Norman:

http://www.darcynorman.net/2009/05/20/stopping-spamblog-registration-in-wordpress-multiuser/

I have modified the .htaccess file in all of my Mu blogfarms.

I will report back if this works......  :-)

Hi CJ, I love reading your posts. It is then I realize I don't know very much abut this and should be learning. In the post you liked to I did recognize Akismet and know that it it has worked well to keep the spammers out of my posts. As to the Multi-user thing, I am not sure what that is but I find it all very interesting and applaud the fact that you really do seem to understand this stuff very well. Maybe one day I'll get there?

It's bookmarked.  I don't see myself setting up MU but Lane Bailey and WordCamp have me intrigued about BuddyPress and I would assume you'd have bots trying to sign up there too... someday maybe... your posts title made this irresistable.

Here's why I like Multi-User:  Forget about the social network/community aspect for a minute.  I find Mu very very handy for single property sites.

New listing?  It only takes half a minute to create a new site (you are just adding a new blog to an existing Mu blogfarm)  ... you'll need a little more time, of course, to fill it with content, and a few more minutes to register a domain name and map it to the new blog with Donncha's plugin

But once you get it down to a system, you can churn out single property sites bada-bing-bada-boom....

All on the same hosting account, all on the same WordPress installation.....

Caution: CAT BLOG AHEAD

Including random thoughts on life, art, business, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate.

What is a CAT BLOG?

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary." Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.

Enjoy!
