Love Bug

Yeah, if I seem like I'm speaking through my teeth, it's because it's "Actively Raining" those awful Florida LOVE BUGS here in Sarasota FL.  Today is the worse day.  Went kayaking up to Midnight Pass and the love bugs were as thick as smoke there.  There, we were afraid to open our mouths to talk, so we silently ran over the grassy hump and jumped into the Gulf.  Fortunately, out in the open water, they are not so bad.  At least the things don't bite.  For any of you who've never seen them, they are little black creature with a tiny bit of red on their tip and they are always mating.  Once they mate, they die, so their existence is short lived.  The swarm of love bugs comes to the area twice a year and usually lasts for 1-1/2 to 2 weeks.  Then they're gone till next time.  Besides being pesky, they are a very acid bug, so they need to be washed from you vehicle on a regular basis or the acid will start to eat away at your car.

Hey, it's a small inconvenience to have when one is living in Paradise.

Nicki - the love bug sound pesky I don't think I know what they look like, do you have a picture?  I know you gave a description but in this case a visual would have worked best.

Nicki,

We were Kyaking out in Tarpon bay on Sanibel and didn't see any. Now the northside of our cottage where the Sun hits is another story, we're socked in with ,love bugs over there.

Yah I was gonna say the same thing myself. I live in the desert and would love to have your problem. :) Interesting info about Sarasota though. I have a close friend who lives there and he never told me about that, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all your comments.  I've heard that up through Alligator Alley, you can't even see the road!
