If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and leave a comment. Many pet stores have agreements with animal shelters to put a certain number of animal shelter pets up for adoption each week.

Some pet stores also have contracts with various breeders.

And if you desire a thoroughbred, especially of a rare breed, you can always go directly to the breeder himself.

There are several things to do to ensure a healthy pet, regardless of whether you are choosing an animal shelter pet, a pet store pet, or a pet from any individual breeder:

  1. Make sure the animal has been seen by a veterinarian.
  2. Make sure dogs or cats are spayed or neutered, exceptions being if you're a breeder or show your animals in pet shows.
  3. Request vaccination records and confirm them with the veterinarian.
  4. Ask the seller for a health guarantee.
  5. Know that under California Penal Code 594625c497z, it is a crime for any person to sell dogs under eight weeks of age.

Hey, Teresa - And even scaly friends like snakes and lizards, or feathered friends like birds. All animals meant to be kept as pets should be examined by a veterinarian.

Hey, Matt - Who's your new little kitty? Have you ever done a blog post about all your cats? If not, you should.

Hey, Karen Anne - Zoey the Cool Cat is always relaxed, except when it rains hard like it did two nights ago and when the garbage truck comes at 7:00 in the morning on Tuesday mornings.

Hey, Christine - Unfortunately, there are more pets for sale than there are people wanting to buy them, and the real estate market these past couple of years have not helped as people abandoned formerly cherished pets.

Hi Jim, our local news had a segment just this morning about how more homeowners are not able to keep their pets.  It is so sad!

Hi Jim: I have not done a blog post - YET :)  This one's name is Nicky aka Nikity Splickits and aka Nick Nick Nickity Mr. Splickits.  He was a rescue from a local human organization (Protectors of Animals).  He had no teeth and had skin cancer.  I took him North of Boston every 3 weeks for Chemo but we only had him for 6 months.  He was one happy cat --> Always.

Hi Jim,

I'd really like to see (and I bet Zoey the Cool Cat would too!) you post contact info for pet adoptions. Nothing against pet stores and buying pets from breeders, but I know in San Diego, like all over Southern California, animal shelters are overflowing with pets in need of homes.

Hey, David - I have in the past and I'm sure I will in the future, too. After all, Zoey the Cool Cat came from the El Cajon Animal Shelter.

Great points Jim.  However, I would personally avoid and advise people to avoid the pet shop scenario.  While "some" may contract with reputable breeders, most do not, but will tell you anything you want to hear.  Verifying that an animal has been seen by a vet really means nothing, because there are vets out there who make good money "certifying" the health of an animal, even though they know or at least suspect otherwise.  My mantra is, "adopt from a shelter or rescue group."

Hey, Terry - I certainly understand, but here in San Diego we have at least three activist groups that I know of that monitor pets, pet breeders, animal shelters, veterinarians, restaurants serving foi gras, etc. Oh, man, you don't want to get on their bad side for they can do some serious harm to your business. Interestingly, after last November's elections, many pets and even commercially bred food animals almost have more rights than I do as a gay man. Go figure.

Jim, I do know that Last Chance for Animals based in LA is doing a very good job of monitoring breeders in CA.  The problem is, many dogs are shipped in from puppy mills in Arkansas, Missouri, and elsewhere, as well as being purchased online.  I'm glad to hear there is some serious monitoring of the industry in your neck of the woods.  I'm also glad to hear that animals are getting more rights, but it doesn't say much for our society when it leaves out a special interest group such as the gay community, does it?

Great post Jim! I volunteer and raise money for our local "Blue Dog Rescue" They help all breeds find forever homes. Thanks for helping to raise awareness of this issue.

Hi Jim,

The pure breed rescue groups are also a good option. I got both of my dogs through Seattle Purebred Rescue and they are nationwide.
