Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 – November 30. But if you try telling a May 80 MPH storm to cool it for a week or two, you probably won't be very successful. Recently, the first tropical depression of this year's hurricane season formed in the Atlantic. With hurricanes on the horizon for Floridians, it is best to utilize this Hurricane Preparedness Week to make your home a safer place.

Hurricane Preparedness Week was formed by the National Hurricane Center to remind people who live in places that are prone to hurricanes to be prepared. The following are a few safety tips for those who might be affected:

Hurricane Tips for Families
  • Make sure you know what your home is most vulnerable to- whether it is storm surge, flooding, or wind.
  • Choose a safe room in your home that will keep you safe against each hurricane hazard.
  • Choose escape routes out of your home, and places to meet if there is an emergency.
  • Ask a friend who is out of state to be your families point of contact.
  • Form a plan for your pets if they are forced to evacuate.
  • Place a list of emergency numbers by your phone.
  • Check your hurricane and homeowners coverage.

Although hurricanes are common, no one thinks that a storm will destroy their home. Most homeowners insurance policies have hurricane coverage standard- does yours?
