I read an article this past weekend that left me amazed. The focus of the article was on a county marshall that had a gross income in 2008 of $ 3,167,627 primarily for delivering court documents.

The bulk of his income came from the two largest law firms in our state whose primary focus is foreclosures. One firm alone paid out $2,200,000 to this marshall with the offering that he got the work because of the quality of his service. In our state, marshalls are paid a base fee of $30.00 plus $1.00 a page for each set of legal documents they serve, in addition to reimbursements for mileage, recording fees and other related costs. This would break down to $21,000 receiver per week, or the equivalent of delivering a 40 page lawsuit, every 15 minutes, 12 hours a day six days a week.

This one marshall has at least 2 deputies working for him and the disclosures showed a total of $160,000 paid to the depities.

The new income for this marshall came to $ 1,119,700, so he obviously had significant operating expenses besides the 2 deputies. Among the operating costs were lease payments got the office building he occupied, the office staff needed to keep the files in order. Could these have been maybe family members?

For him there's no waiting around for a client. No time spent on researching properties, preparing contracts, chasing lenders, appraisers, inspections and so on.

This one marshall, however may stand out but he was not alone, as there were 7 other marshalls that netted over $ 250,000 after expebses, with gross revenues over $1,000,000.  Nice work if you can get it.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. You can make as much in real estate and not be subject to political appointments.

All of the RE/MAX agents that have received the Lifetime Achievement Award have received over $3,000,000 in real estate commissions. And many of those individuals have additional non-commission income from buying and selling homes or their rentals.

Roy,  I'm not be-littiling the lifetime achievements of any RE/MAX agent, or any of the other national brand companies with their similar recognition plateaus. The essential difference here is the achievements over a period of years against a political appointees annual income.

I may never be a lifetime achiever, for a number of reasons, but as someone who took the classes, passed the exams, had to re-educate myself every 2 years to remain licensed, and have a watch dog board and ethics of business by which I must abide, I find this amazing.

Wow. Just for riding around and delivering documents. I wonder how much work they have to put in tracking down the locations of many of the people they have to serve papers on. And its a political appointment???
