I was born and raised in Florida. A Florida native, once thought to be a dying breed! Not really, however when I was growing up there was not as much in-migration as there is today. I am a child of the 70s. Well, really the 50s if you consider the decade I was born! Where the heck is Rockledge, Florida?

I moved here about 10 years or so ago. To be honest, I had never heard of Rockledge Florida even though I grew up 125 miles north of here (closer to Jacksonville). Rockledge is located in Brevard County, Florida. Florida's Space Coast as it known here because we are home to the Kennedy Space Center. Rockledge is almost midway between Jacksonville (145 miles north) and Miami (actually about 200 miles or so to the south), between Interstate 95 and US Highway 1, both major north-south routes. Rockledge is only about 45 minutes east of Orlando, Florida and it's attractions - home to Mickey Mouse!

Rockledge, Florida is typical of your small Florida town now days. With a population of about 26,000, it is still one of those towns where you know your neighbors. It has a main street, Barton Boulevard. What is on the main street? Let see. There is the City Hall, a place where you can still go in and speak with the City Manager or the Mayor. What else is on main street? The Police Station. A small force of about 50 or so officers. A place where you can still speak with the Chief of Police, if you so desire! Main street (Barton Blvd) has the corner drugstore. Actually, two of them - a CVS/pharmacy and a Walgreen's Drugstore.  Barton Blvd is home to McClarty Park and other community athletic facilities and parks. It is one of those streets that still gets the full treatment of Christmas lights during the holiday season. Barton Boulevard is undergoing a major renovation project, complete with a fountain in the center near City Hall and more. Barton Blvd seems to have lost some of the "main street" attractiveness but, hopefully, it will be re-gained with the current project.

Rockledge is one of those small town where you can get involved. Whether you desire to be involved with City government communities or just coach a Little League sports team, there is something for everyone. Speaking of sports, like any small southern town high school athletics are important here. The Rockledge High School Raiders enjoy the support of the community, especially the football season. What is a Friday fall night without a good football game? The Rockledge Raiders are always in the fight for titles. Having won the Florida High School Class AAA title in 2001 and 2002, there is always optimism for Raider football. Folks here just do not want to lose!

Want to enjoy the golf? Then Rockledge is a great location for you! With the Rockledge Country Club available as well a Turtle Creek Golf Course, you are close to some of the finest local course.Only a short drive away is the Viera East Golf Club, another fine course to test your skills and patience! Also, less than about 15 minutes away are the Patrick Air Force Base golf course for the military retirees as well as active duty personnel and the Baytree National Golf Course as well as Suntree Country Club. Those are just a few of the local courses and there are many more to choose from - all within a 30 minute drive of Rockledge!

What else does Rockledge have to offer? As for medical care there are 5 hospitals within the Brevard County area. Within Rockledge is Wuesthoff Medical Center Rockledge. You also have the Cape Canvaveral Hospital, about 15 minutes away and Holmes Regional Medical Center located in Melbourne about 20 miles to the south on US Highway 1. And lets not forget about the excellent neighborhood schools!

The planned development of Viera, home to a lot of recent development, has multiple new subdivisions with more being built every day! There is lots of new shopping at The Avenues Viera, a proposed to-be-built new hospital,as well as a minor league baseball stadium which is the spring training home of the Washington Nationals. The minor league Brevard Manatees, a farm team of the Milwaulee rewers, enjoy a great deal of support from all of the Brevard County population. Like they say baseball is as American as apple pie!
