To mark the 2000th Anniversary of the birth of St. Paul, the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, on Route 107, Brookville, NY will be hosting a concert on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 8:00 PM. This evening of classical music will feature the Diocesan Choir of Rockville Center Diocese, a 150-voice choral group under the direction of Michael Wustrow with soloist Holliday Haynes, Alto together with full orchestra. I am one of the founding members of the Diocesan Choir.
The concert will feature one of the oldest hymns of the church, the Te Deum, which is believed to have originated in the fourth century. The choir and orchestra will present a Te Deum setting in Latin by the classical composer Franz Josef Haydn, an Anglican setting in English by the contemporary British composer John Rutter. Several works based on the life and writings of St. Paul will also be presented, including a dramatic work by Norwegian composer Egil Hovland, which uses narrator, choir, and organ to tell the story of the Conversion of Saul. Other music by Haydn, J.S. Bach, Gustav Holst, Lowell Mason and James E. Clemens will also be featured.
This concert, part of a year-long celebration in the Diocese of Rockville Centre honoring St. Paul, is being sponsored by the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in Brookville as one of its parish observances for the anniversary year. Proceeds of the ticket sales from the concert will benefit the rebuilding of the Bishop Gerald J.
