FRAUD ON CRAIG'S LIST!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Hubbell Briarwood

I had an incident that happened to one of my sellers this past weekend that I think the rest of the realtors need to know about. As part of my advertising, I upload listings to Craig’s list under housing for sale. My seller received a phone call from a lady that said that her home was listed on Craig’s list for rent. The ad had all of the information from my ad; pictures, address, description, etc. The perpetrator searched the web to get the seller’s name and created an email address using her name at yahoo.com. The background story was that the husband was being relocated to Africa and they needed to rent the house. In addition to the phone call, my seller had two couples show up at her doorstep wanting to rent the house. I also was contacted by an agent in my office, who had a client interested in renting.

Here is the contact information that I received from her buyer client: my contact with him was via email....email address is (I have deleted the email address that he used, as it is my seller’s name) and he sent me phone numbers of: +234-702-963-2643 (Nigeria) or 011-234-805-803-9541 (this number is the number for a Nigerian puppy scam).
He stated he was out of town on business....

My seller contacted the State Police and they believe that it is similar to the email scams that we get all the time about someone dying and needing help getting their inheritance. The only thing that they can do is contact Craig’s list and have them take down the ad.

I intend to check all of my listings on Craig’s list to see if they are listed for rent as well as for sale. I suggest that all of us contact our sellers and let them know that this is happening and that they need to contact us and the police if someone contacts them. It was very unsettling for my seller to have someone show up at her door wanting to rent her home.

Geez...that Nigerian scam thing is everywhere...if I had all the money they promised me almost daily...grrrrr....You have to know that some people somewhere must  be falling for this stuff or they wouldn't continue to do it...

Dolly, I had this happen to some clients I am working with. They live in a nearby city, and I referred them to an agent in their area to help sell their house. The agent put the house on Craig's list and this same exact thing happened. My clients were already upset with the agent for not getting feedback and following up, and the Craig's list incident just put them over the top. Even though it wasn't the agent's fault. Craig's list started out to be such a good site. But, just like anything, the wrong people have to come and ruin it for everyone else.

This one has actually been around for a while - thought it had died down since I haven't heard much from it lately.  Craigslist is an awesome tool and I just hate that it gets tainted like this!

Coleen,

I will continue to use Craig's list. I will check things regularly and warn my sellers when it is listed. If we stop doing things because someone MAY do something, than we will stop doing anything.

Guess they have a lot of time in Nigeria to sit around thinking up ways to email Americans out of money?

Dolly, I had heard back during the winter to beware, someone was "stealing listings" advertising them for rent, collecting rent or deposits from several people then disappearing, leaving many homeowners stymied and renters in a bad spot.  What a scam it was...  thanks for the heads up that it is still happening.

Thanks for the post, I had no idea that something like this was happening.  I will definitely warn by sellers not to talk to anyone but me or someone in my office if they receive calls from someone else.

Interesting however anytime I see africa or anything like that I know it's a scam you think these people wouldl earn to use other countries. That's one reason I dont use Craigslist plus I had a few stalker phone calls too

Those pesky Nigerians are so prolific it makes me wonder if any legitimate business is conducted there.

Here's another Craigslist problem: web bots!

Thanks for your post. Agents and their clients need to be very careful when using Craig's List as a source of information.

I won the lottery in Nigeria once and didn't even buy a ticket! All I had to do was give them my bank account information so they could transfer the money....

I had one of my listings stolen and duplicated. It took me concerted effort to get Craigs List to remove it. The frustrating thing to me is that there is no way to directly contact someone regarding abuse at Craigs List. If they want us to use it to promote our listings, they should implement a way for us to quickly identify and alert them of abuse so that it can be removed immediately.

Dolly,

Unfortunately, Craig's List is notorious for these types of rental scams. There is no lack of creativity on the part of scammers.

Dolly, unfortunately, you are not the first one and you are not the last one. They are everywhere! I was checking the cars for sale the other day, you would not believe how many scammers are out there. And the stories that they tell...

Same thing happened to me! Be careful of Lovette Gary, I found her through craiglist. She wanted a transfer through Western Union, using my name as the receiver. She/he probably used a fake passport to collect the money. Avoid these transfers and be careful!!!
