Yup those hackers are at it again and it appears that 40,000+ sites have been hacked. The article has all the details as to how they did it. The problem when these types of attacks occur is that it’s not always easy to spot the hack. In this case people coming to your site are redirected to several other sites. You should go to your site now to see if that is the case. IF you ever see anything that seems fishy it’s better to play it safe, after all people rely on your site as a safe place to be and if it becomes no longer trust worthy you could see a significant impact on the number of people who use your site. This really seems unfair but that’s just how things are in the internet world. Security is a very hard thing on websites and depending on how popular your site is it can really become a target for hackers. They want either big sites with a ton of visitors who they can in turn infect with whatever malicious application they dream up or generate traffic to a site of their choosing to in turn generate income. There is a lot to this sort of thing. Sometimes they want low traffic volume sites that they subtly change because the owner of the site would never notice.

What can you do about this? Unless you are a security expert there is probably not much you can do on your own. I would highly suggest if you think your site is affected to take this very seriously and see if you can hire someone to fix it. It could end up costing you quite a bit but think of the impact if you don’t fix this.

Shane - I'm happy my website has not been hacked. I'm sure it could cost me a lot headache.

Thanks for the warning. My only regret is that more hosting companies don't help do a better job assisting their users to be secure.

I had this issue last week - luckily, I use Wordpress which generates an error instead of redirecting visitors somewhere terrible. Even luckier, I have a great resource that got me cleaned out and up and running in about an hour! It is an awful feeling though - you don't know why they'd target you. And until you're back up, you always wonder if they messed up something really bad.

Unfortunatly, the only thing anyone can ever do is make sure there running the latest versions of the software.  So if your running a wordpress blog and it sys theres a newer version its time to update, just remeber to take a backup first. I know its a pain but taking this simple step can save you a lot of time oif this ever happens to you.

Great philosophy i see all around the place is "Backup early, Backup often"

Some of the most important things to remember regarding website security is to trust no input and do not allow unnecessary permissions to your scripts. Whenever an application on your server receives input from an unknown source it needs to be filtered. The methods of doing this vary according to the application programming language in question, but the gist of it is to strip any potentially harmful tags. For example in PHP, every variable received either through the POST or GET method, would be subject to the following: $zipcode = urlencode(htmlentities(strip_tags(trim($_POST['zipcode']))));  This same fundamental holds true for any applications running on your server, WordPress is a good, and for the most part, stable application, but it does have lot's of vulnerabilities. There are a number of other ways to secure your website, as well. Applications written in .Net have many more built-in security features and support a variety of authentication and authorization models.
