There is a need for some clarification as to how RAINdexing or Indexing your Outside Blogs works on ActiveRain.  With all the options available and the inter-connections between AR Blogs, Localism and Outside Blogs etc.,  I am going to try and simplify how it all works and what it all means.  Since my recent post "poll survey results" concluded that reading was the #1 best way for the majority to learn, I'm opting to do a Blog post on this topic.

Here's the 5 areas we'll cover in order to help you grasp and get your arms around how this all works:

Channels, Topics, Localism, Outside Blogs, Categories & Local Post Widgets.

MAXIMIZING INDEXING ON OUTSIDE BLOGS - PART I

Indexing Your Outside Blog Categories Using Channels and Topics

TIP: The Channels and Topic options are located just below the Visibility Section when creating or editing a post.

When creating a new Blog post that you want to appear on your Outside Blog, it's imperative that you are adding the post to Channels and giving it a "TOPIC".  Topics will appear on your Outside Blog as "Categories" and will be indexed or RAINdexed accordingly.  When you apply the Categories Widget to your Outside Blog, your "Topics" will appear on the sidebar as "Categories."  See below.

Here's a Screen-shot from the Outside Blog Sidebar
(This is referred to as the Category Widget)

A---------C---------T----------I--------V---------E---------R---------A--------I---------N

MAXIMIZING INDEXING ON OUTSIDE BLOGS - PART II

RAINdexing your Outside Blog Local Posts Using Localism and the Local Posts Widget

TIP: The Localism options are located just below the Visibility Section when creating or editing a post.

To have your Blog posts RAINdexed and sorted by Geographic Location, you'll need to add them to Localism for this Widget to work on your Outside Blog.  Adding posts to Localism allows you to select State, County, City, and even down to a specific neighborhood.  Having these geographic locations broken down this way allows viewers to search those specific Hyper-Local posts by "Index" for the areas they may be interested in.

Here's a Screen-shot from the Outside Blog Sidebar
(This is referred to as the Local Posts Widget)

A---------C---------T----------I--------V---------E---------R---------A--------I---------N

MAXIMIZING INDEXING ON OUTSIDE BLOGS - PART III

How To Add The Indexing / RAINdexing Widgets To Your Outside Blog

Step 1:

Go to your Outside Blog and Log-in

Step 2:

Click on the link at the top of the page and then click the button.

Step 3:

Open the "Add New Widget" pull-down menu and select "Categories" or "Local Posts" then repeat.
(you can only add one widget at a time)

Step 4:

You can use the button to align your Index Widgets by simply dragging and dropping them where you want them to appear on your Outside Blog sidebar.  Once you're finished, just click on  .

Step 5:

Click here to see a sample of how this has worked well for another AR member.  RAINdexing is Powerful.

I hope this post clears up some of the confusion or misunderstanding of how all these tools work together to get you the best possible results and indexing of your Outside Blogs.  As always, if you have any questions or need any assistance, our support staff and team are always ready and willing to help.  If you do not currently have an outside blog but might be considering one in the future, taking these steps now will ensure you won't have to go back and make edits to your posts in the future.

I have not had the Part I visible

MAXIMIZING INDEXING ON OUTSIDE BLOGS - PART I

I took the widget to show that the categories off because it is SUCH a long list and part of it seems redundant with the first part of  PART II.  I just made Categories visible..on one of my two blogs. It looks horrible. I am going to have to work to make it look better.

Brad - Your last sentence stated "If you do not currently have an outside blog but might be considering one in the future, taking these steps now will ensure you won't have to go back and make edits to your posts in the future."

I don't have an outside blog or localism yet since I joined in May 2009.

1)  Thus, how can I take the steps for the outside blog and localism before I start paying you?

2)  Once I start paying, I assume that I can go through my internal blog and select certain postings to go to the outside blog.

Thanks

Hi Brad: That was neat - thanks for sharing as always!

7:27pm • #20

Maureen - one suggestion that has worked for others with outside blogs is to have a second window open so you can see the categories on the sidebar and then create your topics accordingly.  If you have a thousand topics, the categories widget can get long and ugly.  Consolidating those topics can be neater and might be more beneficial to visitors.  Just a thought...

I'm just going to make a comment, because I have no clue how to "bookmark" this.

Gotta find an AR tutorial!

7:34pm • #22

Marc - let me explain in a bit more detail.

Many members join AR for FREE, and eventually become rainmakers and get outside blogs.  In the meantime, ALL members should still be adding topics and adding their posts to channels to cover the Categories Indexing when they do start posting publically.

The Localism part will only come into play once you are a rainmaker and using Localism to generate hyper local content in your gepgraphic area.  It shouldn't take long to see the value of an AR rainmaker account or the outside Blogs so this really hasn't been an issue up to this point.

The topics and channels however when left blank will leave the indexing widget blank on the outside blog when the time does come to launch it.  I hope all that jabber makes sense, I think I drank too much coffee today, sorry.  :-))

7:36pm • #23

Lori - here ya go, just click on the Bookmark located at the bottom of every members post to bookmark:  Save_blog

Am back and ultra serious. Thanks to Bill Gasset too for letting us see his stuff!

Channels are pre-set, which I grasped and accept fully.

Topics- I had been entering a couple letters and seeing what my choices were. Are these also preset or can one establish her own?  If the latter, are there Google-juice pluses to using well-established AR topics?

Most important part - Am I again going to lose points when I edit existing posts to incorporate new knowledge? I'm backsliding on Google Mountain...(Okay, so not ultra serious!)

Bill - you are good!!  You found a tiny link on the network hidden in millions of posts that used your Outside Blog as an example with no warnings or hints, yet you found it anyway!  I am impressed.  The Test is now over, I just wanted to prove how good you are my friend!  haha.  For that, I will see what we can do about getting those categories sorted by alpha for you.  It would be nice to be able to sort with multiple options available, I'll check with Jorgen and see what we can come up with.

Thanks, and great job on finding that "example" link in this post, and with your outside blog.  :-))

1:01am • #54

Topics- I had been entering a couple letters and seeing what my choices were. Are these also preset or can one establish her own?  If the latter, are there Google-juice pluses to using well-established AR topics?

Most important part - Am I again going to lose points when I edit existing posts to incorporate new knowledge? I'm backsliding on Google Mountain.

Irene - you can establish your own topics, the ones that appear when you start typing are just in the memory.  You can chose existing topics or create new ones, depends on how you want your sidebar widget to look on your outside blog.  Not sure of the google plus, but I'm sure it's recognized, the title and the content are more important to google than your topic, but since consumers do search topics and geographic areas, I would imagine it plays a significant role.

Regarding points, there was a bug in the system awhile back that added points to a post everytime you would edit that post.  Some were editing just to game the system for points.  If you do edit a post, there is a chance that post could drop back down to the 475 range, I have had this happen to many of mine where the points were legit, but it's worth it to me to provide updated, accurate, and useful info on my blog and to make corrections that help with my OB and SEO.

1:10am • #55

I have a question: how long does it take for the Outside blog to get indexed? Or rather, how soon do many people see an increase in traffic to their blogs?

William - there is no definite answer for that one.  There are too many variables that would affect that result.  Multiple Contributors, amount of subscribers and traffic, links and back-links to your OB, not to mention Google is a mystery on how and when they do things and why.  Just keep doing all these things and it will get indexed and picked up by the SE's.  Also, add the google search widget to your outside blog, this helps to get it indexed even if just for their widget.

1:15am • #56

J Phillip - there is no comparison with AR Outside Blogs and Wordpress Blogs.  That's like comparing apples and oranges.  We are a Real Estate Social Network and Community, Wordpress is strictly a Blog Platform.  AR has groups, localism, outside Blogs, referral networking, newsletters, advertising, Hit Router, and more, with millions of visitors and millions of member contributed blog posts.  You can't compare the two?

If you'd like some support and ideas how to better your AR Outside Blog, it's ranking, it's SEO etc, I'd be happy to help you out.  Give me a call anytime, you won't get that offer from wordpress either..   :-))

1:24am • #57

Brad, this is so embarrassing. As long as I've been doing this, I really didn't understand the AR Channels. If I go back and add them on my posts, will it have the same effect?

I wish I had NOT added them.. it would be easier to just be adding them now, not removing them and readding them.

I have been working on removing and re-adding the AR channels for a day and a half now... with two screens open at all times...( not straight through of course) my Worthington blog looks OK... my older Columbus blog is still a snarly mess.  I had just looked at it and said "Goodness that's Ugly" and turned off categories on  my outside blog not understanding what the purpose was.

Back to try to unsnarl it.

Brad - One tip.... If you create kind of a road map before you re-assign all your old posts, you can create something with more meaning.  I have wanted to have an index, not kowing that this was the way to do it. Intesad I created a complicated system that works here ar my AR blog.  Now, my plan is to create 5 or 6 sub categories for each category, then be vigilant about posting only within those groups.  to me the goal is to not get your post so spread out that people can't find what they want.

Unfortunately, this only organizes your outside blog.  It would be nice if this also worked in organizing your AR blog.

Thanks for posting this, tho.

Sally - we used to have the category links on the sidebar of AR blogs, they are a bit different in that they are pulled strictly from keywords used on Blog Posts.  There was a great demand to have the links consolidated as in many member cases, they would run down the side of the page for miles and miles.  The solution was to create the pull-down menu that is now in place.  Maybe we could look into creating a similar type of "topic" related link for AR blogs.

Jeff - thanks for not saying I'm full of something else.  LOL~  :-)

I am done... finally.  I hope I never snarl up my categories again... or be tempted to hide the snarly mess from consumers eyes because obviously that hides it from the search engines too.  I had the Part II OK but Part I was the snarly hidden mess...  I did not understand.

Dumb stuff, plural rather than single.

I couldn't figure out why I had one staging post (a Re-Blog ) that was not with the others... you gotta spell staging with a g, if you use a q....as in Staqing, it is not the same Topic or same Category (on the Outside blog)  as Staging with a g.
