Unless you have been living in a cave for the past few years you have probably heard all the hype about "Going Green". Many people don't really grasp the concepts, but have just heard that it can be better for your health.
If you have ever cleaned a small confined area with cleaning chemicals you have most likely notice the fumes and odors that they give off. For many they are a necessary evil to keep a clean house....right? No, think again, "green" cleaning products do exist that are made of more natural ingredients and by many are believed to be healthier.
However, consumers beware, just because a product claims to "be Green" does not necessarily mean it is. As the green theme has become popular amongst consumers many products and companies are guilty of greenwashing. Greenwashing is defined as when a company, product, or person, makes the claim of something being "green" without having any real proof of positive environmental impact.
Before purchasing a green cleaning product here are some important facts to consider: 1) there is currently no standards for labeling a cleaning product as "green" and 2) there are no requirements for disclosing all of the ingredients.
Therefore, from a consumer standpoint you should be cautious about products that make very general and generic claims such as ones that claim to be "safe", "natural", "eco-friendly", and biodegradable".
There are however some companies that have formed for almost the sole purpose of creating environmentally friendly products such as Seventh Generation www.seventhgeneration.com, Method (www.Method.com), Simple Green (www.SimpleGreen.com), and Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day
(www.mrsmyers.com).
