This time of year brings to mind hurricane season in Texas and Louisiana.  This means that when a hurricane hits many shelters are set up in the Dallas area.  As a Red Cross Volunteer certified in Emergency Shelters this is usually a busy time of year - and not just for the real estate market.  Hopefully, we will not have another Katrina with multiple hurricanes to follow.  Should this happen though, I will be knee deep in cots and scared evacuees.  There are so many things that these people will need.  First off even a smile and a bottle of water will help to relax and welcome them at a time of great uncertainty about their homes.  Also, assigning them a cot and blanket, a meal, medical help where needed and games for the children.  So, much goes into a shelter during these times of trauma.  Showers are welcome events in a shelter.  It is amazing all the services that show up with careful planning.  Volunteers are always needed.

Should your area Red Cross ask for help, I hope that you will consider answering this call.  You can work as many or as few hours as your schedule allows.  I guarantee you the reward is invaluable and it always seems business comes along three fold.  It is good to remember that "by the grace of God there go I" as tornadoes or other events could very likely happen to us or our families.  If such an emergency were to happen, I would want my family to receive a nice, helpful person on the other end.  And... who knows how to be helpful and nice to people better than a Realtor who excels in our service industry.

Hope to see you in the trenches should we be needed.

Hi Sandy, This is an amazing blog, very informative and I also live in a well known hurricane zone. I live in Central Florida and I know how much the Red Cross is valued. If I was asked to help some one in need I would be honored. Thank you and God Bless!

Thank you.  I love Florida and try to visit a little place North of Lauderdale each year.  Hope someday to retire there.  Thanks for supporting the Red Cross.  It is an amazing organization.
