This is is a first of a series of posts on Yellowstone National Park.  Yellowstone is the first national park in the U.S. and the world and it was established in 1872.  It is located mainly in Wyoming (96% of the land) with parts of it in Montana (3%) and Idaho (1%).   Forests comprise 80 percent of the land area of the park.

Whenever you hear about Yellowstone National Park, most of you who have visited, read about it must have the following photo in mind.

Old Faithful

Yes, Old Faithful (the regularly erupting geyser seen in the photo) is probably the most photographed things by visitors to Yellowstone but I hope to show you many more interesting features in the upcoming posts so that you can have a better appreciation for this beautiful and unique place on Earth.  I better warn you.  If you have not yet visited Yellowstone National Park, you may want to place it on your list of places to visit during your lifetime by the time you go through the series of posts.  And if you do, make sure to also come and visit Red Lodge, only 69 miles from the Northeastern entrance of the Park.

Old Faithful may be the most famous geyser but it is not the tallest nor largest geyser in the park.  It is located in the Upper Geyser Basin. As of June 2009, it erupts at intervals of about 91 minutes.  More than 137,000 eruptions of Old Faithful have been recorded.

Old Faithful

The photo above shows a panoramic view of the Upper Geyser Basin area where Old Faithful is located (visitors and the seating area can be seen on the left, and the roof of the Old Faithful Inn can be seen in the distance).

Stay tuned for the second post of this series where I will start covering some of the other geysers and thermal features of Yellowstone.

Hi Gerry, I remember waiting and waiting for Old Faithful, as a kid and as an adult when we took our kids...incredible that it has never failed after all these years. This will be a good tour Gerry!

Mary,

Thank you for joining the tour.  It sure is amazing to have Old Faithful erupt with consistency after all these years.

I love Old Faithful and my kids went "wild" when they had the chance to see it for themselves.  A true national treasure.

Tom,

I am glad your kids got to experience Old Faithful with you.  I am sure it made a last impression on them and they will have very found memories of this experience shared with their dad for many years to come and pass it on to future generations.   The whole Park is a national treasure and the best is to be able to share it with family and friends.
