After two major surgeries, D.V. Fennell had to be talked into coming back on the road by travel partner Justin McDaniel.
And, man, is he glad he listened.
The Missouri bareback rider was already in the top 10 of the PRCA World Standings entering the May 28-31 weekend and then strung together three wins in three states in three days to further advance his bid for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification.
Fennell, 35, got the run started by sharing the bareback riding title at the Old Fort Days Rodeo in Fort Smith, Ark., with Tilden Hooper, each scoring 86 points on Harry Vold stock. Fennell then went on win at the Cherokee (Iowa) Chamber PRCA Rodeo with an 80-point ride on Barnes PRCA Rodeo's 2A1 and the Licking (Mo.) Chamber of Commerce PRCA Rodeo with an 82-pointer on Mid-States Rodeo Company's Native Son.
It all added up to $4,904, enough to move him from seventh to sixth, within $3,002 of his friend McDaniel, the reigning world champion in the event, for fifth place. Fennell's season total of $37,160 is closing in on his best full-season total of $44,140 in 2005, when he finished 22nd in the world.

Even though bareback riding is an interesting sport, these guys take a beating for the money they get. Too bad that the sport doesn't pay more...
