The popular San Diego County Fair will open on June 12, 2009 at the Del Mar Grounds and run through July (the fair will not operate on June 15 and June 22).

The Del Mar Fair Grounds are world famous for the wide range of events held there throughout the year, but perhaps are best known for Thoroughbred Racing Season (July 22 through September 9) and the San Diego Fair. The Del Mar Fair Grounds are located at the Via de la Valle exit off the 5 Freeway, at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. (Information - 858-755-1161).

The San Diego County Fair is one of the largest in the country (ranked #5 in 2007 with attendance at over 1.2 million), and second only to the Los Angeles Fair, with an incredible array of events, exhibits, rides and games, animals and food offerings to suit every taste. This year Music Mania will be the theme, including a Musicpalooza contest (similar to American Idol), with contestants narrowed down to 12 bands and 19 singers competing for the $25,000 prize.

Just a quick reminder - traffic can get pretty ugly during fair time, on the side roads but in particular on the 5 freeway heading north and south near the exit. So plan your time accordingly, whether traveling to the fair or commuting north and south, and expect delays, especially on the fisrt and last days and on the weekend.
