Rescue me...

raccoon stuck on lamppostWe have a visitor at our house, a cute little half grown raccoon.  Unfortunately he appears to be stuck or at a loss of what to do.. this afternoon we brought him some water in a small bowl, i think he is afraid to move and drink it.  We have now put a 2x6 board from the top of the post to the ground hoping he will find his way down.

Unfortunately we have 2 dogs that are not friendly to trespassers.  Squirrels normally have a 60 second lifespan if they wander into the dogs space.  I am hoping this little guy can find his way down the board and wander off into the woods across the street.

He is very cute.  Especially since he can get in your trash and not mine.

Gail,

Nice humanitarian thing to do. Be careful though since they usually stay away from people unless they're sick.

Wow,

Wish he could come here. We have up to six at a time. They are very cute but can be destructive too.

I think he is probably scared to death of the dogs.  He knows he has a limited life span

I think you'd better pick him up and deliver him past the yard dogs.  He's scared to death.

My last raccoon-dog encounter cost me over $1,200 in vet bills.  The dog was curious, the raccoon mistook his sniffing kind of personality as a hostile take-over.  This resulted in a bite behind my dogs ear, which abscessed, very ugly.  For dogs sake, I hope the raccoon skedaddles.

Even though he is cute, I hope for your sake, he keeps his visit to a minimum and is able to find his way out and back into the woods.

Hi Gail... they are not so cute when they become regular visitors.  The ooooh's and aaaahs! over a cute baby racoon lose their novelty quickly!  Good luck with Rocky!

Gail,

When I lived in Conroe I had many problems with racoons.  The little masked bandits can get into a lot of trouble.

Hi Gail . Sorry to hear about the end the little fellow came to. But the way you andled it as a wild crature was 100 percent right. It just didn't end well

Charlie, we have wondered if he found the escape we put for him, on the outside of our gates and instead of going across the street to the woods, he wandered in thru our fence and then was dogfood.  :(   Of course Rosie the beastdog ain't telling so we will never know.

Knowing that raccoons can be fierce and they are very wild we were hesitant to try to physically move it.

I rarely if ever see raccoons here around the house. I see many other animals like foxes and squirrels though, because there are woods right behind our home. Hope the poor little guy has made his way back home by now.

Betina and JL..  the little raccoon is in raccoon heaven.  Unfortunately for him when he got down from the post, he still wandered thru our fence into Rosie the guard dog.  Rosie was doing what Rosie does.

Hi Gail, I hate to hear that the little guy didn't get away. But, it sounds like your guard dog was doing his job.
