Extreme Makeover Home Edition Chooses Erie, PA Builder

By
Education & Training with Alan Kells School of Real Estate/Howard Hanna Real Estate

John Maleno, co-founder of Maleno Development, announced that his company has been choosen by Extreme Makeover Home Edition to build a home in seven days starting June 25, 2009 for one of five Erie families being considered.  Julie Maleno, his daughter, had sent an e-mail to the producers of Extreme Makeover relaying her family's long history of giving back to the Erie community.

John indicated to the Erie Times News that he is scrambing to put together a team of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers willing to donate their time and/or materials.  Hundreds of different specialites will be needed.

       Will you volunteer?                                 Which plan?

At this time John cannot give them the exact location or building plans.  He can tell them that the project starts on June 25 and must be done within seven days.

The mayor of Erie, Joe Sinnot, has pledged the full help of City Hall to facilitate approval for permits and other paperwork.  John was quoted by the Erie paper, "We can show what kind of community we live in."

Congratulations John Maleno and Maleno Development.  See link to their Extreme Makeover Site on their website.

PS  The very first contract I wrote as a new agent in 1986 was for one of Maleno's homes.  Maleno Development are Certified Green Builders.

Mary, I truly enjoy those shows and how nice they've chosen a new location for an Extreme Makeover and that they build green!

Heather--Absolutely I will check out the job site as most of Erie will I am sure.  I thought you were off today for the weekend.

Harry & Eric--I plan to have a great weekend.  A little work and a little fun and relaxation accompanied by warmer temps sounds good to me.

Carole--I knew the producers were considering Erie along with other cities, but now we are really excited.  I am delighted that they picked John & his company.

Hi Mary!

We had the joy of the show coming to our small town here in UT. They came I think about 4 years ago, and it was an awesome spectacle. People lined up to watch them build that beautiful home. It was extremly fun for our community, and I know you will also enjoy it! :)

Lisa--I am glad to hear that the show picks smaller cities.  And yes, excitement is in the air here.  As of today we still don't know where this house will be located.  I will post an update when it is announced.

Hey Mary! I'm glad you posted this on AR. I went to the Extreme Home Makeover pep rally yesterday, and was really impressed with the amazing number of local sponsers and donations!  I feel very fortunate to be able to help out with this wonderful project and can't wait for next week!

Gretchen--Like most people in Erie I can't wait to experience this event right here in our own community.  I am glad to learn that you are helping, too.  I plan to add to this post soon.

When will we know what family was choosen? How will that be approached?? My sons just told me they wrote to them earlier this year? Was there something in the paper for this? I dont know how my little guys would have thought to do it that is why I am asking?

Brenda,

The family & the location will be revealed tomorrow, June 25, 2009 via website, print and TV.  I will post here, too.  Last year the Extreme Makeover team announced they were looking for cities and families.  Then we heard that Erie was being considered.  About a month ago we learned that Maleno Development was chosen to build the home for one of five Erie families.  There is a lot of excitement in the Erie community and many people willing to volunteer time, money and supplies.
