Talk the Walk or Walk the Talk?

FeetAt 8:00 a.m. I'm walking. And, being a Type E, I can't do just one thing at a time, so I've been thinking about how to combine the walking with something I love to do – talking to other real estate professionals, especially mentoring new agents. Then I thought, is there any way I could combine the walking and talking with some giving back to the Active Rain community?

The Lovely Wife made a good point about comments and reciprocity.  When we look to AR for support and comments on our posts, we should be looking at ourselves to see if we're giving that support that we want from the community. What if I talk with Rainers while I'm walking? I might be able to share some good information with new agents, and then they would have a ready made topic for their own blog.

One thing, though, is there are not too many people you can call at 8:00 in the morning without worrying about waking them up. It was bad enough that I called Laurie Manny a few months ago and woke her early on a Sunday morning. I don't want to do that to others.

WalkTalkOn my walks I've called a few folks who I knew were up because they had already commented or posted on AR when I checked, but maybe there's a better way.

Send me an email if you want to talk at 8:00 a.m. (eastern) on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning, and I'll call you.

With 17 years of experience in this business, I have lots of information and tips I love to share. And you'll help me keep walking. Now I just have to figure out if I'm talking the walk, or walking the talk?

One thing you can try is while your walking write your blog. You can do this with plugoo.com you can use your cell phone make a call to plugoo and they will turn it into type and email it to you. This service is free. Try it outl.

Hey you can ALWAYS call me:) OK maybe I shouldn't play since we talk frequently already. BUT this is a wonderful idea and I would suggest as many people take you up on your offer as can. I can assure them it will be well worth the time.

Great idea, Margaret.  I'm a runner.  I think if I tried to call somebody, but they'd just get heavy breathing and hang up.  :)

When I do my elliptical I try to specifically not think about real estate or business matters.  It's amazing how many thing I work out this way trying not to think about them!  Jeff: I'm going to take a look at that plugoo.com site...sounds great!

Sorry, 8:00am eastern time is 2am here.  It would have to be 8pm eastern time to catch me.  :)

Jeff, I have been using jott.com which sounds similar and  is also free. It turns my messages into email as well as an audio file. Very very simple. Heard about this on Active Rain. Will have to check out plugoo.com also.

BB, You are welcome to call me at anytime for anything. You wrote a good blog back in September about one of our conversations. Margaret Rome.......thanks for the "Brain pick"!

Chris, I always start the conversation early on in my walk and explain up front about the heavy breathing...just so I don't get hang ups. When I use JOTT, it is sometimes hard to understand myself thru the "gasping".

Bob, That's great that you can work stuff out while on the eliptical

I'm with Chris except I have masted the upside down phone technique.... I'm a good listener and the caller can't hear me huffing and puffing... Plus Realtors are so long winded I have plenty of walking time to recover before I need to speak..

05/29/2007 06:35 PM by Dan Cummings - Connecticut's Running Realtor (Raveis Real Estate)

Randy, I will always be aware of the time difference. Just let me know when you would like to talk..we will work it out.

Dan, Good solution. Let 'em talk, you listen.

05/29/2007 10:35 PM by Margaret Rome- Baltimore, Md.-HomeRome.com (TREC-Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome)

I listened but with all the huffing and puffing I missed a few words... Can I get a transcript?   :-)

Dan, Oops... guess I didn't do enough of the listening like you suggested. The transcript is in the mail. :)

Enjoyed our chat and it made the walk go by quickly.

Hi Margaret...You can call me ANY TIME!  It's always a thrill to talk to you.  I generally hit the home office to get as much admin stuff out of the way as possible around 6:30 AM.  then it's off on my Segway to the local coffee shop to "chat it up" with the many locals that frequent Henderson's.  So...at 8:00 AM, you may be able to reach me...unless I am engaged with someone talking real estate or handing out a flyer for the Great Segway Giveaway!

From one Maryland Margaret to another - I completely "get" where you're coming from, with the desire to maximize the effectiveness of your time.  After 33 years in this business, however, I have FINALLY learned to let go sometimes.  It was not easy, but I am soooooo glad I did - so, some morning just force yourself to take a deep breath and try to take in the beauty around you.  It might make you even happier and even a better real estate agent than you already are.  For a start, try for five minutes of your walk or just one day a week...

Jay, Do you mean that we could actually talk  while you are on your segway?  Now that sounds like fun and quite a visual!  Does the Segway come with bluetooth?

Hi Margaret from Maryland! I really do enjoy the beauty around me and will frequently take photos. I also love the friendships that I am forming while on my walks. Thanks for stopping by. Margaret from Maryland, also.

Margaret....the Segway doesn't come with a bluetooth, but I do.  But even if I didn't, I could simply stop in place and take your call!  Have you heard about the new movie called "10 Miles per Hour" about two executives that quit their jobs to ride from Seattle to Boston on Segways?

I just passed two police officers "mounted" on Segways yesterday in College Park, Maryland.  I hope they're not expected to be in hot pursuit of criminals.  :-D  I'd talk to you anytime, Margaret -- on or off a Segway.  I'd even ride in your *brown* car, though you'd have to listen to me beg for the top to be down!

06/06/2007 03:37 PM by Gregory D. Maley - Metropolitan Washington, DC REALTOR (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage - Chevy Chase)

Gregory...Actually there was news yesterday of police that were able to apprehend three people that stole a car by being able to pursue them on Segways for three blocks (at 12.5 MPH).

Regards...Jay

Jay, Thanks for sharing the movie!  I love your segway idea!! And I hope you have to give many away!

Gregory, That's a way to NOT let the buyers get away!  Would you like to call me Friday morning at 8 am?

06/06/2007 04:46 PM by Margaret Rome- Baltimore, Md.-HomeRome.com (TREC-Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome)

Jay, thanks for letting me know about the cops' success. I have photos of cops on rollerblades in Paris.  Whatever works!  Margaret, I'd be happy to chat with you on Friday morning.
