Jeff's Seo/ Site tip of the day Tip#8

Thou shalt not spam. What is spam when dealing with search engines. Well back in the stone age when google was fairly new they were neandethals. They did not know how to see spam. If you went to your home page and put in Tupelo, MS real estate in the wording 88 times then you have created spam. Back in the olden days (1990's) Google did not know how to see this. They saw those key words and thought wow this site must be about that, and ranked you as such.

Today they have graduated to modern humans. They can read your site and see that the keywords are not in a relative format and will penalize you for such.

As a rule your keywords should not be more than 5 to 6% of the content of your page.

Hope this helps some.

10 - 15% still sounds like a LOT to me. Maybe I'm not doing that enough!  Someone else told me that if I repeated my keywords more than about 3 times (e.g., "Los Gatos") then it would be perceived as spam.

I'm learning as I go. Thanks for the head's up!

Another great SEO tip!! Having a good, search engine friendly site is often as simple as disspelling myths like these and making simple changes. I work with businesses every day who have been misinformed and have actually hurt their rankings instead of helped them.

Keep up the good work Jeff!

Mary was partially right. It should right around 6% of the total words on the page. I told Jeff off the top of my head and got it wrong.

Sorry Jeff!

I'm be curious to see other SEO people comment on this 6% level.  I saw a post with a word density checker highlighted on it, I'll have to go back and see if I can find it and check my page.  Good tip!
