Do you get overwhelmed when you go to a paint store? Then you should let a pro do the work of selecting the right color for your house. Companies like Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn have spent small fortunes putting together their definitive and elegant color schemes, so when you get ready to paint, pick up one of their palettes and use it throughout your house. Every color will work with every other color. It’s almost impossible to make a mistake!

One of my favorite combinations (particularly if you think you may be selling your house in the near future) is Latte for walls, with The Right White molding, and Silver Sage for the ceiling. I can't tell you how many houses I've sold using these colors.

In the photo I used this combination with Flax above the picture rail.  Stop by the University Village store (4635 University Village Place Seattle, WA 98105 - (206) 522-2775) to pick up a samples and paint chips.

Susan - great post!  It can in fact be very overwhelming entering a paint store or a paint section in a store.  The variety of colors and sometimes brands can be mind boggling. And you're right, the Restoration Hardware colors are incredible and do work well with each other.

Hi Kathy,

This is my go palete. You can use a different color in every room and it will still flow.

What a soothing palette. I could look at that picture all day. Thank you for the names of the colors, it's always nice to see them in a real room, not just on a piece of paper. Lovely.

What a beautiful combination, very rich!  It would look great accented with black too!

Susan,

Very nice selections and functional for any style decor! Neutral tones are always best to use when trying to sell a home...great advise for all home sellers.

Susan, my former house was painted in Latte and I absolutely loved it. It was fresh yet neutral and worked well with everything.

Kathy and Janelle: This is the dressing room adjacent to my guest room which has the same combo.

Maureen: You're so kind. Thanks!

Peg: Restoration Hardware also has sample sizes so you can see it on the wall before you commit.

Yuno: I'm glad you like it.

Sharon: That's the beauty of it. It goes with almost everything.

Michelle: Now if we can just get them to listen to us before they paint.

Kathy: Latte is like a Wonderbra for your walls!

I think that color is one of the hardest things for people to choose.  It is a bit overwhelming with 1000's of colors.

What a darling space! I really like the color palette, but that light fixture is to die for!!

Color is indeed a challenge for most. We get emergency calls for "decorative therapy" and "interventions" relating to color all the time. We hear from many people who suffer from Chromophobia (you know -- where they freeze and can't pick any color at all and the sheer sight of paint swatches sends their blood pressure up a hundred points) or worse, the Paintaholics (the ones who paint over and over and over and keep getting the wrong color).

Your tips can certainly help many overcome their Paint-Phobias and quandary's!

Linda and Ashley: I bought that light fixture in Virginia. I go there almost every year and get my shopping fix.

Cindy: Color can be one of the scariest decisions a seller has to make.

Beautiful photo, and paint recommendations...thank you, Susan. When we are on a client's site for a staging consultation, it's great to have quick answers to 'painting to sell' a home. I will add this pallette to my arsenal of staging-friendly colours!

Hi Wendy,

I carry their sample fan in my purse. Now you just can't do that with a the typical fan.

Thanks Cynthia. It's a fairly dark color but it doesn't feel oppressive.
