Why Throw Out That Ugly Pink Refrigerator?

Do not remember pink ones -- but remember the avocado and yellow .

I just saw a pink one, along with pink built in ovens at a home that was an estate sale.  Pristine home.  I should have taken photos, but as I didn't have permission I wouldn't have posted them.

BTW, I wanted to take them home. So charming and eclectic!

I have seen a handful of pink fridges over the years - I like the mental picture of the marketing meeting.

Hi Lizette ~ I think that refrigerator's awesome!  There are fans of vintage appliances who would snap it up.  I have never forgotten a pink time capsule kitchen in a house that was on the market in my area several years ago. 100% pink and untouched - probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s. It was museum worthy and I keep meaning to get in touch with the people who bought it.

I think the almost instant obsolescence that we have to deal with nowadays is an outrage. It affects so many things - computers, hot water heaters, windows (I have a loooong rant - make that a post -in me about the value of old windows vs replacement windows that are on their way out from the minute they're put in), appliances large and small, etc. The impact on landfills is horrifying to think about.  Even lightbulbs for goodness sake - some of the original ones could last 100 years.

Great post and right up my alley - I put in a vintage stove and am saving up for a rehabbed vintage fridge - not sure if it will be pink but it might be!

I am sorta undecided as to which one I liked more the Green or the Yellow one. 

I love the pink one! :)  I think it would look nice in my kitchen!  You are right...it seems beauty over functionality and durability are more important to people today!

My grandmother had one of those.

She had red and white checked floors, you brought back many memories.

I agree most new products are made cheaply and fall apart 30 minutes after the warranty expires. It is the plan of the manufacturers. They do this so they can sell you a new one each year. I say if the pink one runs like a champ, I will take it. I can cover it with pink flamingos or something frivolous. I need another fridge for the party area by the pool. Bring it on baby!!

I remember growing up my parents had a fridge that was 35 years old before it finally gave up...the one I have now is barely 10 years old and it needs replaced or some work done to it at least

Lizeette you sho know how to bring back memories.  My first year in real estate 1987 I was out looking at cool homes and ran across a 'fifties' looking mansion.  Wow.....I had to see that one.  Pretty cool and advanced in it's day. Then.........came the kitchen.   The whole freaking thing was PInK.........I mean everything.  We all just kind of shook our heads and thought.....huh?  Why in heavens name would you want everything to be pink?  Was it a fad in the fifites?  I don't know but it'd make a great coffee table book!

And I'm all for making things last. It so crazy that we are a throw away society that it's cheper to buy new. Crazy.

Hey Lizette that pink fridge could have value as a movie prop!

We owned a sixties vintage rental with a brown & gold fridge, worked great but when the house was empty I realized it alone was using over $2.00 a day in electricity - and it wasn't even a large one - so it was economically obsolete and we replaced it.

Hi Lizette, nice picture I'm thinking if this could somehow be shipped over to Tampa, Florida we could drop it in the bay and start our own artificial reef!  I'm sure after 20 or 30 years that old pink refrigerator will be feeding people once again.  Provided I give them the latitude and longitude to my secret reef, or should I say my pink reef?

At any rate cute story maybe you can turn that into a KEGORATOR!  Pink KegOrator! LOL!

Lizette - Pink is new to me too.  Makes me wonder, are we all going to laugh at the stainless fridges that are so popular now?  Funny how styles change.  thanks for the fun post.

As for obsoleteness:

I (still) have an Olympus OM-2 SLR camera. It needs cleaning -- just a cleaning, and maybe fix one thing. Can't do it, have not been able to for about 15 years -- I'm not sure why I still have the camera. Olympus stopped making the gaskets that need to be replaced when the camera is disassembled. Don't know anyone that does.

Lizette, the fact that "it's cheaper to buy a new one" is such a way of life now. AND it makes me crazy. We are such a throw away society. I used to have a little guy that I could take my small appliances to for repair. He was great. When he retired, the shop had to close.

Looks like a collectors item and there are collectors of kitchen applainces!
