Is it worth $40,000 to have 4th of July fireworks at McIntire Park?

Well that is the cost and according to our local paper, The Daily Progress:

Organizers decided to drop the festival after seeing the recession’s toll on the area, saying they did want to compete for funds with nonprofit groups that provide “basic human services.”

Well the "Charlottesville’s Save the Fireworks Committee" a band of local businesses that has for seven years planned and funded the city’s annual Independence Day celebration, is dropping the festival after this year, committee members announced Wednesday.

Most of our local leaders in Charlottesville agree that the fireworks should continue but there is no consensus on how it would be funded...

stay tuned!

I hope local businesses will come up with a way. They can use less fireworks but continue the tradition.

Fund raising can be FUN....it's getting late to do that for this year...can you have a smaller display...find a less expensive source (we have one in Wisconsin that is family owned...and successful...I will send you the name...who knows....) Maybe AR connections can make a whole town light up !

Charles,

The headline in Tucson's "Arizona Daily Star" two days ago announced cancellation of the July 4th fireworks.  Within 24 hours, local companies and individuals had raised and committed enough money that the fireworks are back on, and there's overage toward the 2010 Independence Day fireworks!

Hi Charles:

I think we're going to see many towns cancel their fireworks this year.

Just another sign of these turbulent times!

I would say in the same situation I'd be on the side of keeping fireworks if the funds were going to come from a private source, but in this economy there is NO way I'd say tax/public funds should be spent on fireworks.  Hope you get it funded though.

Charles, I have a strong opinon on spending money for the July 4th Celebration.  So here we go...

July 4th is the PREMEIRE HOLIDAY for AMERICA.  It is not religious, it is not from another country and imported.. it is the CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM.

The American Public needs to continue to recognize and celebrate this most sacred day of our history, if we discontinue the fireworks that is next to telling a child we don't have money for a Christmas present for you.  It is devastating, heartbreaking, and soon one will lose the tradition, then the meaning.

In bad times, hard times, that should make us closer and we can gather together and still celebrate, with fireworks, so it won't be so grand, it can and must go on. The celebration of FREEDOM is what fireworks are about... sure it a fun night to get together with friends and neighbors too, but its a community bonding.  In hard times we need a bit of joy.  Especially in hard times!

Sure, people will still have picnics, barbeque's, holidays but without the fireworks to celebrate the finalization of the evening it would lose much of its meaning.  Sure maybe not now, but eventually, losing and eroding the meaning the time to be reflective of all those who gave their all for our FREEDOM.

Surely there is time to have a gathering of people and get this done, Community bake sales? Car washes? begging?  If everyone one gave something the celebration would continue, it is our most prized possession,  FREEDOM.. as the song says.. LET IT RING.   now and FOREVER.

Charles, I cannot tell you how sad your post made me feel this morning.  I was born and raised in Charlottesville and the July 4th fireworks display is one of my fondest memories. As a child, my siblings and I would go to McIntire Park for swimming and picnics and we always looked forward to the 4th of July celebration. My mom and dad would pack up a picnic supper and off we would go. We would spread the blankets and enjoy the entire night of fun and fireworks.

I sure hope they find a way to fund the celebration and continue the wonderful times for current and future generations.

Charles, It is sad when budgets become a factor. That is our future right now...

I would bet several local fireworks will be eliminated or combined with neighboring cities to cut costs and it is a good idea.

Interesting. It is amazing what these displays cost to put on. When you look at it, it a lot of money going up in smoke very quickly...
