Sometimes I think that selling real estate in today's market is like tilting at windmills!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Windmill on Cape Cod, Eastham Massachusetts by Richard WeisserIn the novel Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes, the title hero espies what he perceives to be giants on the horizon, arms flailing, ripe for attack. He salivates at the possibility of sufficient spoils to continue his quests,

But his trusted squire Sancho sees only windmills, with their sails turning the mechanisms that will grind the grain for bread. Sancho knows that his lord's aspirations are futile. And so the English idiom "tilting at windmills" has come to mean "fighting an unwinnable battle."

It seems that a lot of real estate agents today are indeed tilting at windmills. We perceive the huge spoils of the past, and we are poised and ready to plunder the treasuries of giant deals. And so we keep fighting the way that we have always done, with gallantry and poise, but there is one difference today:

Even after engaging in a long and noble fight with determination and tenacity, there may be no treasure in the coffers to pillage. After months of battle, we may arrive at the closing table only to find that the money will not be there ...ever.

We have slain what we thought were giants. As is turns out, they were just windmills.

Russell...

Oh, you sensed the frustration in this post? lol We actually had two fall apart in the last 2 days. It's distressing, but it's part of the business. Thanks.

Richard,

I never realized how many darned Windmills there were in Maryland. I'm going to have to get the MLS to add it as an architectural type, like Colonial, Split Foyer, etc.

Richard,

There is no question there are deals falling apart that would not have happened 2 years ago! I am spending more time rechecking and checking with the lenders and title companies throughout the process. As the listing agent I'm checking and rechecking that the repairs are being done and documented for the buyers plenty of time in advance so if they want to send their inspector back out we have the time to accommodate. I'm sorry you had 2 fall out hopefully they can be resurrected!!

Have a great week-end and thanks for the post! Love the picture of the windmill!!

Yes, we can't spend windmills at the grocery store, only closed deals. I hear you! God bless and give you wisdom, hope and real deals that close quickly.

Richard, I loved your post and I always have fond memories of Don Quixote (the book and the play - I wasn't around for the real one, if he existed).  But, I'm enjoying the comments even more.

The metaphor is even more fitting as we try to deal with the banks on the foreclosure and short sales!

Dorie...

Most of our failures are happening at underwriting. Seems like they are changing their parameters on every loan. It used to be that we could fix a minor issue and get a clear to close, now they just say NO! THX.

Dawn...

That is all too true ... as Dorie said ... we need to know what we're really up against! Thanks.

Renee...

I wasn't even thinking of the musical, but between you and Lenn, the tunes are spinning in my head! Lol, thanks for cheering me up ...

Yes we do ... I remember our choir sing that in the sixties! WOW! Thanks, as always.

Gabe...

It really is an interesting concept ... trying to vanquish an imagined foe! Thanks, and have a great Saturday!

Bill...

I don't even want to go there ...as Lenn would say that is the "Impossible Dream!" lol

But the windmills will always be there, we just need to recognize them as such. We need to pick the battles we can win.

Richard, we should not fight battles that are futile like windmills. It is not the mark of a smart person plus it wastes energy.

This may be true my friend, but I would rather fight a windmill than give up. For me it's more about the battle than anything else.

The giants we are slaying are taking there toll now. I can see it and feel it. The tempo has been slow. Great analogy LOL Renee.
