Twitter - Have You Lifted Your Head To Look Around Yet ?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Centre Inc., Brokerage

Or have you already started to crawl?  I'm in the baby steps stage.  Many of you are  running full out with it.  Twitter means many things to many people.  A few days ago I penned a blog post and I mentioned that I would do a folow up post on how to play nice in the Twitter sand box. Getting in the sandbox is a Crawling Babypersonal, individual choice.  The following points are Twitter facts with my personal observations.

1. Twitter is a tool.  A micro-blogging tool where you can put out information immediately (to whoever may be listening) in 140 characters or less. Twitter is another social media outlet.  It is out there and you may or may not choose to use.

2. Should you choose to use, think about what purpose you want to use it for.  Personal or business.  Or both.  What messages do you want to send?  Who do you want to receive those messages?

3. Twitter is an announcement board.  It is different from e-mail and blogging.  Twitter provides the ability to have direct interactive conversations.  Just remember, these are not private conversations.  Anyone Baby with ballwho is following your tweets is privy to what you are saying.

Baby running4. Who do you follow ? You follow interesting people, like fellow bloggers who you enjoy.  If you like their blogs you may like their tweets. Before you follow anyone, read their bios and what they have been tweeting.  Celebrities, newspapers, television newscasters and personalities, major companies are all tweeting.  There are Twitter searches that can help you find twitterers you may be interested in following.

5. Be selective.  Just because someone decides to follow you, that doesn't mean you have to automatically reciprocate.  You will start to be followed by some people who you have no clue where or why they found you.  You have the ability to block any follower.  I have only had to block one so far.

6.  Be considerate to your followers.  Remember what you put out there cannot be retracted.  Don't spam and don't be stupid.  Be spontaneous, but make sense.  The world is listening.

7. How do you get followers? Be interesting.  Show your personality with your tweets.  Provide insights or information that people can use.  Add a link in your tweet  to take your followers to your website and other interesting sites, articles, blogs, etc.  Share knowledge. If you read something you really think others would enjoy, you are able to retweet just the way you can reblog.

8. Decide how much time you want to spend on Twitter.  How often do you plan to tweet or read your followers tweets?  Keep it manageable.  Only follow people who tweet the information you are interested in reading.  You can check their tweets once a day, or once a week, it's up to you.  Unlike e-mail, tweets are like an all points bulletin.  You are not required to comment or send a reply unless you so desire.

9. Check out who else your followers are following and who is following them.  It is fun to peek and see who else is out there in Twitterland.  Often you will find colleagues or company members in other parts of the world that would make a good fit for your Twit Book.  Sorry, that's a play on Facebook and I don't know if there is actually such a thing but I think you know what I mean.

10.  Look before you leap  creep.  Does Twitter appeal to you?  What purpose will you use it for?

As I mentioned above, I am in the baby steps stage of Twitter.  I use it strictly for business purposes.  I post real estate statistics and community information.  I do not tweet on a daily basis.  I have Twitter on the front page of my website for consumers to see my tweets.  I also have my blogs automatically sent to Twitter.  My tweets go automatically to my Facebook home page.

One of the best things I find about being able to pick and choose who I follow, is that I find an amazing amount of information about the topics that interest me.  It also gives me ideas for future blog posts.  Whether you love politics, gardening, astronomy or gastronomy, experts with their fingers on the pulse of any pertinent topic are tweeting for anyone to listen.

I have had 4 e-mail notifications of new followers today, 2 since I have been writing this post.  They  found me and have decided to follow me for whatever reason. I will be making a return visit  to see if they are local or from afar and what they have to say tweet.

It's up to me to decide whether to be a follower or not.  Like any social media platform, there is lots to learn.  You can choose to learn the basics (simple) or get heavily involved with Twitter searches, add ons, etc.

Twitter works great for those who prefer the K.I.S.S, take it slow learning style and also for those who like to giddy-up-and-go.

It's just another tool in the big Social Media toolbox.

Well, I'm getting to know some folks I have seen around AR and some that are new and it's fun but mostly I view twitter as one giant chat room where most people are chatting to themselves, or to others who are lurking. Nevertheless, sometimes I'll say something or someone else will and I will respond or they to me, and a small bond begins to grow. Over time, these people will get to know me and me them. It's fun and I can see where business could come from it. Happy twittering! BTW, get Tweetdeck if you want to be able to keep up.

Hi Jenny,

Tweeting is so fun, educational, and yes, I've gotten good solid leads from it. I try to focus on building relationships, letting others know I'm out there, and I make great connections with others in my profession. It's a great tool, and this post is a great education piece for those just diving in!

Twitter is on the cover of this week's Time Magazine. Twitter has gone beyond being a cult. You have to get to know it if you are serious about social media. I am not saying that you must Twitter, but I think you are missing out on a tool that is growing exponentially.

I do not use twitter to tell the world what I had for lunch, when I go to the bathroom, what my BFF said on the phone or when I am headed out to show a house!  I use it to sell my market, promote my blogs, and share useful information.  I train on social media and I cannot believe how many agents say, "I just don't get Twitter...how does it benefit my business to tell everyone everything I do all day??"  I inform them to not "follow" people who do that and to follow people who are using it to promote professionalism and convey data.  I have Tweetdeck and I have gotten alerts that have led me to blogs that have given me tools that make me more money!  Thanks to Twitter or I may have never seen the blog!  Thanks for the post! :o)

Jenny, I'm right where you are with Twitter, taking baby steps.  I am following Astro_Mike who was on the last shuttle mission to fix the hubble telescope.  Now that was pretty interesting.  He seems like a really cool guy.

I currently send my blog posts to Twitter and Facebook... but I keep thinking I want to cut them off and do it manually in order to make sure to actually interact a little...  But I am still sending them.

We're on Twitter but we don't actually spend much time there.  We set the account up for businees and really have not devoted much time to it.  We'll have to look into it a little deeper.  Thanks for the post.

Hi Jennifer,

It's funny as the 140 characters are like a teaser to see if the link is something that may be of interest.

Hi Courtney,

Thanks.  As a beginner, it certainly isn't the best tutorial but I just wanted to give an overview from what I have learned so far.

Hi Y. & D.

Thanks for sharing.  If the statistics show the average number of hours of sleep is reduced we will know why.

Hi Lane,

I was wondering about cutting mine off from Facebook also.  I use Facebook for personal rather than business purposes but I do have some clients on there so maybe I will just leave it for now.  I do get some comments from the stats and blogs I post. Good luck and thanks for your comments

Hi Patricia,

You could kill two birds with one stone and just have your blog posts go automatically to Twitter.  Then whoever is following you will get them as soon as you post.

Hi Sergio,

So you're in the baby steps stage also?  Some day we can run together also.

Hey Tammy,  It sounds like you are WAY OUT there in the Twittersphere.  How cool is that???

Hahaha T.L.W - You a twit?  Never.  But then again what do your followers say about that?

Thanks Peg - So you do the blogging and Al does the tweeting?

Hi Rebecca - Oh the apps!!! Where do you start?  That's why I never mentioned them in the post.

Hi Joe - Thanks for sharing about the Time magazine article.  I will have to check it out.

Hi Amber _ I haven't gotten to the point of getting leads yet - But it does sound like an interesting prospect lol

Hi Jeani - It sounds like you are running with Twitter.  You are making it work for you.  You are right.  Don't follow the I just picked my nose, or I just wiped Bobby's nose type of tweets.  Enough already.

Thanks Steve - see comment #32 under yours.  I can't reply as there is no name.  How can someone comment without their name showing up?

Hi Sharon - I love your comment - The lurkers and the people who chat to themselves - Interesting take on Twitter.  I think you need to write a post about it.  Seriously though, do you think this will really bring out lurkers or nutbars?  So many people say where they are at any given time.

Hi Anna - It looks like some people are making contacts and leads. There aren't a whole lot of people using Twitter in my community yet.  I see a few other agents there.  I'm just going to keep tweeting the sales stats and my blogs.  I don't really want to get "Up close and personal"

Hi Roland - Differences - Do you mean between the personal chit chat and the links, and the marketing people who are looking for business?

Hi Dawn - sounds like there are some strange twits out there.  What are people thinking.  Oh right.  They aren't - They are the ones who speak first and think afterwards

Hi William -Thanks for your comment.  Yes that Harrison is a clever guy.

Hi Steven - I'm glad you like people who give good tweets.:)  I'm just starting to notice all the retweets of the same info.  Like no one listens to the news or reads the paper to find these things out anymore???

Hi Lana - Wow, are you ever organized!  I haven't tweeted from my Blackberry.  Thanks for the tips.

Hi John - Thanks so much for your input.  That's interesting to know about the power of a retweet.  The Mayor of my community retweeted my sales stats.  I'm still waiting.......:)

I guess I am still missing it.  If this is a way to communicate, why not just call someone?  It is much more personal.  I get so many junk emails already I don't read nearly half of them.  Will this new system cause even more junk to read?
