I'll have a review on the camera and everything that came with it a little later, but today I wanted to give you a Guerrilla Marketing review on the company I bought it from.

I had been checking out several web sites as well as local camera stores trying to decide where to spend thousands of dollars. Ultimately, my search led me to eBay, which I didn't have a good opinion of because of some experiences several years ago. A friend convinced me that they had changed, so I checked them out.

I found a package deal on eBay that included the following:

  1. Canon EOS Rebel XSi camera bodyCanon EOS Rebel XSi camera body
  2. Tamron 28-80mm lens
  3. Tamron 75-300mm lens
  4. .45x lens converter
  5. 2x lens converter
  6. 8 GB SD card
  7. USB SD card reader
  8. Carrying case
  9. Lens cleaning kit
  10. Screen protectors
  11. Lithium ion battery
  12. Battery charger
  13. AV cable
  14. USB cable
  15. Camera strap
  16. CD guide
  17. Printed guide

The eBay ad stated that everything was new in never-opened boxes with warranty cards. And the price? A mere $764. Definitely too good to be true since I had already shopped the camera body and stock lens at the local camera store.

Gray market? Refurbished or like new instead of new? Ah, questions, questions, questions.

I went to the Internet to search for the company. Unfortunately, I found some bad reviews over at ripoffreport.com and resellerratings.com. Having been in retail myself, and having a husband currently in resale (as well as being a Realtor), I know that problems happen. I also know that in some instances, some people cannot be pleased under any circumstances.

So I went back to eBay to check out their ratings there. They were listed as a Power Seller and had 99.1% positive ratings. I read through their most recent reviews, as well as a sampling of other reviews for different months just to make sure that the company was not posting positive reviews for itself.

Finally, I took the plunge and placed the order using a credit card. All seemed to have gone well until I got an email from the company saying that my order had been canceled due to a shipping address that didn't match the credit card address. That didn't make any sense to me since I've been at the credit card address for five years, and I've only had the credit card for five years.

I visited my bank and found a problem, which the bank corrected. I replaced the order only to have it canceled again. I called the company and asked them to run it while I was on the phone. No luck. The lady I talked to said to call the toll-free number on the back of the credit card rather than going to the bank. She was right. For some reason, the address was my home address rather than my office address, and I got it corrected.

I called the company back, but still no luck. The lady I talked to told me to hold while she called my bank. In no more than a minute she was back telling me that everything was okay and that my order would be shipped within five days.

Late in the evening on the third day, I got an email from the company with the UPS overnight tracking number. UPS sent it all over the nation before it got to me here in San Diego on the fifth day.

Box of camera equipmentThe box was in good shape, and everything in my order was in the box, all packed very well and in original packaging with warranty cards. I've been taking everything for a test drive for the past few days and all seems to be working better than expected.

It's an awesome camera, awesome accessories, and an awesome company. I can highly recommend them and would not hesitate to use them again.

Oh, by the way, the company is Pyxis Camera out of Brooklyn, New York, also known as Camera Discount Warehouse and Sunshine Electronics. The extremely helpful lady in their credit card processing department was Marianna. I left them five stars at eBay, and I've also entered my review over at resellerratings.com and will be entering one at ripoffreports.com, as well.

Great customer service is Guerrilla Marketing at its finest. It costs little or nothing and can win customers for life.

I'm so glad to see your post.  I've considered buying an SLR camera from eBay, but had the same concerns you expressed.  It's good to know that (when the time is right) I can try the eBay way!

Also, I really like the way you include your previous posts with links.  I'm pretty new at blogging and always like to see what other bloggers are doing to enhance their site.  It was also nice to see that you have a few blogs a day.  I wondered if it was "acceptable protocol" to do more than one one any given day.  Good to know!  Thanks!

I'm a skeptic too.  And about a year ago I ordered a dog kennel on line and the company was super great.  They actually didn't have what I ordered, but they contacted me and gave me a free upgrade and made sure I was a satisfied customer.  I love great customer service stories.  More often than not you only hear the bad ones.  Often people don't take the time to write a good review.

I want a new camera so bad!!! Bt there's really nothing wrong with mine. I guess I should be happy I have a good one. It's just a few years old. But it works perfectly and has excellent video mode too. And I really like having 2 card slots. I have a CF slot and an xD slot. I have an 8 gig for the xD, but the CFs are getting harder to find. I want an 8 gig for that one too.

Gratz on your new camera. I'll try not to hold it against you. >=I

Hey, Michelle

eBay apparently as a buyer protection plan that you might qualify for. I didn't pay through eBay so I wasn't eligible for it. Additionally, eBay takes PayPal, which has its own protection plan, so there seems to be a lot of protections for buyers at eBay nowadays, something that wasn't there a few years ago. Make sure you read through the reviews and try to buy from a Power Seller.

You can do as many blogs per day as you want, as well as commenting as much as you want. Your automatic points for your blogs are limited to 10 blogs a week, but when people comment in your extra blogs, you do get some additional points for those comments.

Hey, Tammy

This part of your comment is very important for people to realize:

....customer service stories.  More often than not you only hear the bad ones.  Often people don't take the time to write a good review

Certainly pay attention to the bad reviews, but if a company has 20,000 sales, and 10 bad reviews, all 10 of which are at ripoffreports.com, and those 10 spread out over 5 years, well, I actually think that's a pretty darn good customer service record.

Hey, Lisa

I still have about ten digital cameras, the best three or four of which at 6.2 megapixel cameras. I have 8 GB SD cards for all of them, which allows me to take about 3½ hours of video, 16,000 pictures at 1 megapixel resolution, and 900 pictures at 6.2 megapixel resolution. They are absolutely great for home inspection work, and Jim uses his for real estate work. It's been so long since I really rewarded myself with something significant, so I chose a cool camera to have fun with.

I'll be rooting for you to get your dream camera soon. Do you need me to send some threatening notes to your husband or children to help matters along? LOL

Russel - You did your due diligence and it paid off, you got one heck of a deal. Now it looks like you've almost got Zoey boxed up and ready to ship over here for a visit. She is welcome any time :-)

Hey, Jennifer - I've also found throughout my life that it's also good to let the company that I'm reviewing know that I've reviewed them and where to find the review. I have received special gift certificates from some companies for doing that.

Hey, Liz - In my earliest days as a youth, and even through the end of college, I wanted to be a researcher. Alas.... Although I do get to do market and business research.

Hey, David - She was in the garage, but she heard me put the box on the bed and she was in the bedroom and she was there lickety split. Cat ears seem to be specially tuned to the sound of boxes and sacks.

Hey, Georgina - You cheated. Zoey the Cool Cat is, of course, the star of my first pictures with my new toy.

Hey, Mike - I'll have to check with Zoey the Cool Cat to see if she's up for any significant traveling. She's kind of a lazy cat.

Russel - Thanks for the great review of your experience. I think many of our members prefer to shop online and this info will be helpful.  Your post has been featured in the Photography group.

Hey Russel,

I purchased a Canon Digital Rebel Xti a couple years ago and have found it to be a great camera. It was a bundled deal with a total price tag of around $950. Like you I was skeptical at first but their rating was good and so I made the purchase. Everything arrived in a timely manner and was just as described.

All was well until one of the lenses broke a short time later and I was unable to get a reply from the sellers. The lens was easily replaced and inexpensive so I didn't make a big deal out of it.

If you have not already I encourage you to pick up a Macro Lens for up-close shots of flowers and insects.

Here is a photo I took of a snail on a leaf. It was smaller than a pinky nail.

Hey, Maureen - Wow. I just joined the Photography group yesterday and already a featured post over there! Thanks.

Hey, Vince - Great picture. Glad someone else likes snails, too. My goodies did include a macro lens converter, and I've already discovered that it works great. I've been reading through the instruction manual and trying out the various goodies to make sure they all work.

Did you not have a warranty for the lens? That was a concern of mine. I didn't want a reseller's warranty, I wanted the manufacturer's warranty, and that's what I got.

7:53pm • #13

To be honest I don't know the warranty terms but it did come with one. I guess after I was unable to contact the seller I sort of just gave up. Like I said it was a relatively inexpensive lens so I didn't care to pursue it.

What's this photograpy group you speak of?

I've found my local camera store always comes very close to online prices.  And the owner of the store has a wealth of camera knowledge.  To a new photographer, that wealth of knowledge may be more than worth the few extra dollars you spend on your equipment.  And if something goes wrong, or breaks you've got someone right there you can go to.

Zoey looks like one cool cat!

Hey, Michael - I always try to shop as close to home as possible, so going to Brooklyn online was something that I wasn't looking forward to. However, my local brick-and-mortar stores couldn't come anywhere near the price online. Just the camera body and a standard 55mm lens was $849 locally, and no one was budging on their prices. Add to that an 80-300 mm lens, a macro lens, a 2x converter lens, and a .45x converter lens, battery, battery charger, carrying case, etc., and the local price was up near $2,000. Then there's the 8.75% sales tax.

The more I tried to justify buying locally, the better that Brooklyn online price was looking.

If the online price and the local price are within 10% of each other, I buy locally.

Russel:  I agree.  You can't go broke yourself while trying to support your local businesses.  They must be competitive.
