There will always be sour pusses who do not agree with what we write, right? Right. I mentioned the other day how I was getting a anonymous comments by a 'so called Real Estate professional' last week commenting on a 5 month old post. Continuously kept coming back and turning the whole conversation to 'self' and starting to attack my credibility.

Well, I put a stop to it when the 'hiding behind the keyboard' person would not come out of hiding at my invitation. Did you know that there is a box you can uncheck or check for Non Member Comments?

On your home page click on the "Settings" link on your left sidebar. You can adjust your settings for Allowing Non Member Comments and even if you want people to see who's blog you're commenting on. (A while back there was a problem with stalkers so they added that on). Uncheck the box if you don't want them to comment on your post.

It's sad that we have to do things like this but it does stop the 'unprofessionals' who hide behind words to puff themselves up. It does get rid of my human need to fight back :) And if a consumer really wants to get ahold of me....they use the contact button.

And just because I want to be positive doesn't mean I let you run all over me.

So There.

How sad that that person acted like that & felt it necessary to treat you like that.  Glad you fixed their wagon!

Ralph: I figure if they feel the need to dump on people they can NOT do it on my blog. Geez.

Kristin: Well...at the time I was mad :)  And if a consumer wants to contact me they will contact me :)

Sally that's just awful.  I did once have a "consumer" leave a comment that sort of flew the wrong way all over me.  But I walked away, took a breather, had a cup of coffee and came back and addressed it as nicely as I could.  I coincided to at least try and see their point of view.  Now I don't really have any way of knowing if the "consumer" was just someone who was not signed in and was an actual member.  I suppose my biggest problem is the hiding part.  Folks are welcome to disagree with me, but I'd like to know who they are when they leave a comment.  So far I've not used that feature, but it is temping from time to time.

Tammy: In my 2.5 years here I didn't even think to use it. One time we got hit with spam but they took care of it. I figure if a public/consumer would like to contact me they will.   I DO have a problem with hiding while smirking, sneering, taking jabs and such. Not my style. Not my idea of a professional.

Wasn't that the title to a Rolling Stone's song, "hey, you, get off of my blog!"  You better get copyright permission from Mick and Keith.  But seriously, I unfortunately made a comment on a Trulia post LAST YEAR and forgot to click the button that said "notify me of responses to this post".  To this day I still get notified of people posting comments to it.  Most of which are no nothings expressing their opinions about why realtors are bad, and how we dupe people into buying into a declining market, yada yada yada.  If these people would only spend their energy on something productive they might not be so bitter.  Best of luck to you Celeste.

I find it so disheartening that people feel that they can hide behind the autonomy of a web page and crank out rot on someone else.  What happened to civility and decorum?  What happened to healthy competition where people don't have to slam someone else to make them feel better?  Jerks are jerks.

Thanks for pointing out the block feature. Getting into social networking has it's benefits but also it's downside.  I'm still kind of freaked out when someone starts to follow me on Twitter!  Fortunately you can block them there, too.

Have a great and productive week!  Hope the markets in Hawaii pick up soon.

Celeste, we have had to use this option before.  Too often people hide behind a computer and spew words that would never come out of their mouths in person.

Hope you are feeling better,  Marti

It is unbelievable what some people will do and shows nothing but cowardice when they cannot inform you of who they are. If they "hide", then their opinion cannot mean that much! Sorry to hear you had to go through that, but glad you can stop it! Thanks for letting us know about this feature...I had never even looked at it. Now, I'll have to go back and make sure they're unchecked.

Hi Sally~ They probably singled you out because you are so nice and they can't stand it! LOL!   I have had a few uncalled things written over the last 15 months, but I wouldn't give them the satisfaction or time of day.  It just isn't worth it.  I know my hearts intentions and that is all that matters.  Its all good!

Celeste,

Good for YOU!  Unfortunately, we can't hide the comments from the other sour pusses who don't care whether their name shows on a comment or not...but at least we can curb the anonymous ones  from leaving nasty comments.  Thanks for sharing this with us.

A certain saying comes to mind after reading your post... the Thumper character in the Disney classic Bambi mentions...

"If you don't have anything nice to say...don't say anything at all"!

Maria: Is that what it is?  I'm just Sally...plain and simple. Just been here awhile :)  And that is no reason to harass anyone anyway. :)

Vickie:  LOL...doubt that...I can stick up for me just like the next person. But when I thought about it...why waste my 'breath' on that person...it was really unnecessary and so unprofessional-like

Angelia: I wasn't 'singled' out....just someones play toy for a day ...  it can happen to anyone,

Andrea: Yeah...one doesn't think about it until it happens to them. I think over the past 2.5 years I've had a couple members harass my group, me and then now this.. Not too bad for that length of time. :)

Michelle: I LOVE Thumper!  Thanks...it is a good saying too :)

Jo: Yup...I can be a kid too...in a nice way :)

Cris: My blog is mine...and mine to handle. It's not there for people to abuse...had enough in my lifetime :)

Hey marti: I think today I'm at 100%. thanks for asking :)  And it can be a chore to fight off people who feel the need to spew. I think I did good...I walked away and blocked. Makes me think of that commercial where the big bad guys are blocked by the parents so their kids don't see the junk. I'm protecting my kid here :)

Sally, is it just me or is things getting worse.  Seems everyday, people show there evil side.  Yesterday my wife was at a end of school cookout for some 4th graders.  A man that was not part of the group came over and started using strong profanity at the children.  My wife touched him on the shoulder and told him not to use that language around the kids.  He turned around, shoved her and threw his alcoholic drink in her face.  She said it was a good thing I wasn't there, because she knew I would have "taken care" of it and the kids were there.  What has happened?  Can't even have a private party without problems from outsiders.   I'm losing faith in people, which is a shame.

Sis - That was me, check the IP;)  I've dealt with this a couple of times and recall it happening to Jennifer as well.  I'm well aware of the little box you can click to block anonymous creatures such as this.  I don't mind dissent, but anonymous dissent is a frail way of joining a conversation in my book.

As long as there are people in this world, there will be people who try to be a jerk just for the sake of doing so. I have people pop in and comment on mine from time to time that do it just to irritate anyone that may read it.

Irene: Yeah...it comes in handy all these AR buttons, checks and stuff they make available for us.

JL: Yeah, I know. It's just that now I know why so many consumers classify us as all in the same bunch of bad apples...it's these that spoil it all for the rest of us :)

Lil Bro: I'd have to noogie you if it were :)   ......anonymous dissent is a frail way of joining a conversation in my book.  ...and is a very good way to sum it all up for sure :)

Ron: It's just that we have to remember there are good and bad in the world and acting like them when defending is just as bad....therefore, the reason I deleted the comments and turned it off. Better to nip it in the bud :)

Mark: I have found throughout my years here on ActiveRain that all the people who contact me do not leave a comment...they read....and read....and watch....and boom! Therefore, no sweat....for me to uncheck. If it happens to you too.....then at least you have that option.

Sally - My guess would be that they are jealous of your success and trying to knock you down. This sounds like a good way to cut them off.

Unfortunately, it also does not leave room for the legitimate consumer that might want to post a comment.

Robert: some may think it's a place to fight about who's better ....geez. Yup, there's a time and place...and I did offer an exchange of a call too :)

Tina: They had no choice...i didn't give an outlet anymore :)

Richard: I do believe it is a cool thing. If the consumer needs to contact me...they will....like they always have :)

Marchel: Not really...my valued clients that have contacted me need not have announced they were going to contact me...and need not comment. Reading seemed enough for them and the next step was to email and then talk on the phone ... that's good enough for me...don't need the other hassles from so called professionals.

George: You're silly....it's a check box for NON members (the anonymous commenters)  And you are.... ALMOST always right. I am the one who's ALWAYS right...lol!

Sally, unfortunately these are unhappy individuals who probably get enjoyment from making others stressed, kind of like a manipulator.  By the way, it's easier to take pot shots to someone who is on top.  Just cut the aka cord!  I would have done the same.

Sally, People only put others down because they are insecure....and they're cowards quite honestly.  I'd get them off too and I'm glad you told us about this option but it's so sad that we even need this option!  I still believe when people make rude comments or remarks they always make themselves look bad...sometimes REALLY bad.  Thanks for the information.

There's a lot of jealousy out there. I had one reader "report" that my blog was in violation of the code of ethics because I listed (and identified as such) other Realtor properties on it. WTF. The ironic part was that I am the chairman of the ethics committee.
