There was such and active discussion on my last post, I decided to post an occasional Facebook tip.

Every time I do a presentation on Facebook, or talk with newer FB users the question comes up:  "Will X know if I delete them as a friend?"  They don't really want to hear from, or they somehow feel weird that they friended them, or maybe they are a competitor.  The answer:  while deleted friends don't get a notification, they may indeed notice that you are not on their list anymore.

If you don't mind staying friends, you can shield yourself from their annoying and inappropriate updates by using a very simple to use filter. While everyone complains when FB does an upgrade, the last upgrade, the one that opens your account with a newsfeed from all your friends, gives you a cool HIDE button

Just mouse over the offending entry, and a ghost "Hide" button will appear.  Click it and then confirm you wish to hide the person's updates , or the annoying applications they want to share with the world, and you never see their updates again.  They never know.  And you don't have to deal with the guilt of un-friending them.

Just for the record, I didn't hide the person in the example. I support healthy debate on Over or Under.

I have "unfriended" some folks.  It wasn't that they were offensive, but I didn't really care if they knew I unfriended them or not.

The hide feature is very useful for us.  You can always click on that person and see their wall if you want to find out what is happening in their life.  Steven and Marti

Oh, I have no problem un-friending either: no explanation. no guilt.

Next post, I'll discuss Friends lists, another new FB feature that lets you selectively filter what information list members can access from your profile, AND lets you tailor your news feed to include only your most relevant friends.

I vote that you should stop the updates from anyone who wants to debate the over/under toilet tissue issue.

I think it's important to choose your friends on facebook and any other social network wisely.

I'd prefer not to have annoying friends then hide the feed.  One of the tricks I use is to not accept random friend requests.  I actually collect friend requests.  I know it sounds weird, but if you never accept or decline them they can never ask again.

facebook friend requests

The truth is that the human brain can only realistically handle 150 real connections.  Anything above that is just superficial.  I've chosen to rework my social networking strategy to make real connections instead of these superficial ones.
