Business, whether it't Real Estate, Buying a Computer or Camera at Best Buy, or getting your car repaired....we are in the position of needing to "Trust" someone else.  Most of the time we take their word as to what we need to buy,  or what we need to do to solve or fix a problem.  They are the experts, and we expect them to know what they are talking about and to guide us through our purchase or transaction. But what happens when our Trust is misplaced?

Business Instincts Graphics

"Trust me" yea we've all heard that one before.  In fact there are people that the minute they hear those words they run the other way.  "Trust me" is the tagline of many a con artist and incompetents.  I don't think they have it patented or anything, but when I hear it I want to run the other way.

This past week I have had to "trust" many different people to help me with a business venture.  The venture itself is immaterial it's the experiences that left me at weeks end with a migraine, very sore back, and wondering where in the world work ethics have gone to.

1)  "I'm sorry" but..........

Lil Devil- What do you mean you're sorry?  You don't have anything vested in this.....will you quit talking  don't you know I stopped listening to you after you said "but"?

I'm so angry right now I could just scream, or throw things, something, as I don't "trust you" I think you're lying to me, but what can I do, there's no way to prove it.  Damn it, it makes me mad....and I just knew I should have gone somewhere else.

Lil Angel- Sometimes our gut feelings should be listened to. Unless someone is really neurotic, or has actual mental problems then listening to our gut feelings can keep us out of situations that we sense isn't right.  Sometimes the anger we feel isn't really at the situation, but at ourselves for even being in the position of being taken advantage of.  In my case I was very angry as I had suspicions that this shop would try to pad the bill....and from the experience all that is left is that I was right.  Whether they were completely honest or not, I have a bad taste in my mouth that they cheated me, and that's all that matters!

2)  Have you ever been in the position where you bought something that the seller said had no problems, only to find out later that it did....

Lil Devil-  Oh Gawd....why did I even bother to ask, did I really expect them to say, "oh yea by the way it has this and that wrong but hey we want top dollar for it."   Embellish, puffing, all those fancy words just mean lying to me.........Just tell me the condition so I can make an informed decision!

Lil Angel-  If I ask you about the condition it's because I don't know how to check it myself.  Someone selling something might not know everything about it, but they have some sort of history, and that's all they can tell.  But saying something is perfect, or has no problems gives the impression that it doesn't need repairs, is ready to be used or enjoyed.

Oh, and another thing.....sellers of everything need to understand about depreciated value.  Why would a buyer pay top dollar (or what you paid for it) if it has been used, has deferred maintenance, has been repaired, needs repairs, is out of style, out of date, or any other host of things.

People will still buy things that aren't in top shape if the Price is Right.  But boy can they get ticked off if they think they are getting scr**ed in a transaction.

3)  Disclose, Disclose, Disclose

Disclose, now that is a mouthful. Very good post, and I hope you resolve for yourself the issue that prompted you to write this post!

Sorry for your recent struggle here, Kathy. More than anything, I've learned to trust my gut instinct. I question it less and less as I get older..I've learned how it is a gift for guidance, so trust yourself and your intuition MORE than anyone...Hope you get a resolution soon.

Hi Kathy, I always love your Lil Devil and Lil Angel posts!  Reminds me of  my husband and me -- I won't tell you who is who! LOL!!   We recently had 2 cars in the shop , I understand about trusting people - when you have no idea what might really need to be done.

you are so right - as far as selling something - people should always disclose, and if it is something they owned they KNOW what is wrong with the thing, and should have told you!!

Kathy,
Seems that some people do business with the attitude -- "I'll get you before you get me".    Sad, isn't it?

Kathy, It's sad that people aren't honest and upfront...SOME people aren't, anyway.  I listen to my inner voice but sometimes there is no way of knowing something if someone doesn't tell you--or worse yet, lies.  And don't forget the people that didn't remember to mention something that would have affected your decision--Honesty COUNTS.

My grandpa always said.... never trust a man that says trust me - and I have lived by that saying... I feel your pain - hugs to you - trust me.... I love ya :)

Sally- I actually thought of you when I was writing this...your steadfast demeanor of doing what is right is a behavior I wish more people had.  I admire you for that :)

Andrea- Disclose is not just a mouthful, but an ethical if not moral duty in my opinion.  It sure goes a long way towards building good relationships :)

Hi Mara....Isn't it amazing how we do trust our gut more and more as we get older?  But hey, the more experiences we have the more we learn, and the more we learn to trust in ourselves.  I have gotten everything worked out for my venture :)

Hi Mary...OK, I won't ask you who is who LOL :)  Do you remember those hidden camera shows where they took cars into shops that had nothing wrong with them, and caught people cheating them time and time again.  Remember the hidden cameras for the car washes.....and they caught people stealing from the glove boxes?  How about the Dental One where they had someone go to different dentists around the country...and there was absolutely nothing wrong with her (had just had an exam prior to the experiment) and Dentists told her she needed root canals, fillings, all kinds of things sometimes costing thousands of dollars.  Only 2 Dentists told her there was nothing wrong....Yep, there are a ton of crooked people, and that "Trust Me" doesn't mean diddly to me :)

Cynthia- Yep....I know that mentality and as you said it is sad.  Sad that they even think this is OK, and sadder that society as a whole has condoned so much of this dog eat dog behavior.

Carole- Honesty...that's a novel concept isn't it :)  I have talked to you enough to know that your work ethics are in line with what I consider ethical and moral....don't cheat others, and treat everyone fairly.  Honesty doesn't always get you what you want, but as you said it is the best policy :)

Thesa- Granpa was my kind of man :)  Oh yea I should trust you why, are you trying to sell me something...... LOL :)

Hi Kathy a very entertaining post and one that also has a good reminder in it. I think the housing genius who came up with the idea that if you spend x dollars improving a house that it is worth y dollars when you sell. Cause what they didn't say was how many years they did it and how used it is now. I love you Lil Devil and Lil Angle series. You are really good at assembling them as well. The " like new " phrase must be used mostly by people who go to garage sales, not selling houses with a "Like New" stove and refrigerator from the 1980's. Paints like new. "Uhm, yes it is aside from all the dirt , chips and stains".

Hi William...very nice to see you this evening :)  I'm laughing at some of your descriptions, and that "like new" one is so right on.  I know many people that are proud they can sell garbage and represent it as the best cuisine.  This world is made up of all kinds...the good, the bad, and the indifferent....I hope to stay as much in the good part as possible by being upfront with people.  Now, when are you coming out here again :)

Kathy, do you think Erica Smith read your post? :)
TSK TSK TSK!!!

Looks like you may have run into some trouble, lately.

I am sick and tired of being disappointed and telling myself 'I should have known better.'.  'I should have gone with my gut.' ... etc.... On the other hand, in business, gut instinct doesn't count.  If we are representing a client, we must remember that we are looking after the client's best interests, which sometimes, UNFORTUNATELY, means you TRUST NO ONE.  You have to do your due diligence and you have to assume everyone is lying to you anyway, and do what you have to do, to make sure you cross all the t's and dot all the i's.

Although there are many trustworthy and professional people out there - Unfortunately, there are far too many untrustworthy, unprofessional, unethical people too (giving the rest of us a bad name), and you just have to do whatever you have to do to protect your client.
Trust no one (it's sad, but it's needed, so it doesn't come back to bite you).
