It is not at all unusual for incorrect information to show up on a person's credit report. This is especially true for parents or children with the same name, just a generation change such as Junior, Senior or IIII. You can demand that incorrect information on your report be corrected or removed - you just have to ask in writing. While you are writing, be sure to provide any documentation that you have to back up your claim. Send a letter to each of the three credit repositories that has the incorrect information. There is no need to send a letter to a repository that does not show incorrect information. The credit repository MUST either prove that the information they show is correct or it must be removed - the burden is on them, not you. They generally have 30 days to respond to a written request for correction.

I have had a great deal of success with my customers when they use the following example letter.

2 Comments on How To Fix Incorrect Information on Your Credit Report

This is good information Joe - Except it's much faster (and easier) to handle consumer disputes through http://www.AnnualCreditReport.com

Consumers can obtain copies of all three files annually at no cost, and it's very easy to dispute any errors discovered.  We often see results back in as little as a few days.

We provide the step-by-step at http://www.credittechnologies.com/Ultimate_Credit_Repair.asp

Hi Joe- yes, excellent information.   A couple of things to add:  consumers should ALWAYS send correspondence to the credit bureaus via certified mail, return receipt requested.  You may not want to spend the extra few dollars, but if that credit error isn't fixed, it will be worth it, believe me.

And doing disputes online may be easier, but if the error isn't fixed, you will not have any evidence that you disputed the incorrect item- it will all be in the hands of the credit bureaus!  So save copies of letters (with signature and date on them- not just data files in your computer), and send your letters certified. That will help your lawyer (if you eventually need one) prove that you have done disputes.
