Being on camera is often a time for smiling, even for those embarrassing moments.
Being on camera when going through a red light is NOT a time to smile.
In fact you may not even be aware that you ARE on camera.
But when that $370.00 ticket arrives from the DMV along with the photos of you whizzing through the red light (and, yes, they get your face, too, plus your license plates) I doubt you will be smiling.
Cameras at traffic lights at major intersections are common here in Southern California, and they are increasing, in part because they appear to contribute to enhance safety, but also for their financial implications. A few dozen tickets at one section per month adds up pretty quickly.
Be aware that these exist, and look for the signs notifying you that a camera is at that intersection (e.g., the intersection of El Camino Real and Encinitas Boulevard in Encinitas; also at El Camino and Leucadia).
For those who are interested in disputing their tickets, you certainly have that right. And I have heard that IF there is no sign notifying you of the camera at the intersection that you may be able to get out of paying the ticket, and there may be some other conditions that may allow you to avoid the penalty. But I am not the DMV, nor an attorney, so you are on your own. But if you are interested in reading more about these tickets, here are a few sites, or do a Google search:

Red Light Camera Tickets
I've not seen any cameras in Carlsbad, but that just be my not noticing. Don't rely on me - pay attention to those signs.

Hi Jeff, I wonder when they will put big cameras around our neighborhoods to patrol the streets and sidewalks ( as well as our front doors). Those science fiction movies of the past may become our new future now that the movie makers are so integrated with helping the government out ( and welcome to do so ) with lots ideas that people need to live in a proper well managed and behaved society. Right ! :-)
