If you leave a comment, Russel will visit your blog and comment.Since my dad and grandad were mainstays with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for everything trains, much more so than the average boy who loves trains.

When I was young and living in Brigham City, Utah, I used to skip school and go out to the gravel pits to watch the Union Pacific trains go by, often letting the big wheels of the train smash a penny or nickel as they went by with the engineer yelling and shaking his fist at me. I guess he knew what I was doing -- LOL.

Now that I'm a big boy -- physically, at least -- I still love trains, and with my new Canon Rebel XSi camera, I can now trespass on railroad property without trespassing on railroad property. Recently I decided to trespass on the property for the San Diego Trolley:

San Diego Trolley     San Diego Trolley

I've been mesmerized by the Trolley since I came to San Diego in 1993 because it runs not on diesel fuel like the engines I grew up with, but on electricity that it acquires from overhead wires called "catenary."

Catenary for the San Diego Trolley

Catenary for the San Diego Trolley     Catenary for the San Diego Trolley

In some areas of the country, commuter trains use a third rail, which is electrified, quite common for underground subway systems like Washington, D.C., and New York City. In other areas trains run on diesel gasoline outside of city limits and then switch to catenary electric power inside the city limits. In a certain since that makes sense because diesel fuel contributes to pollution. However, in another sense it's kind of ironic because the catenary is considered visual pollution by many, which already is a significant problem in many cities.

Russel, As a kid I was fascinated by trains and lived near the track. As the area was a significant grade, the trains passed by slowly, and my friends and I (all about 8-10 yrs old) would jump on the flat cars or climb in the freight cars and ride until the train picked up speed.  Looking back, I've always wondered how I survived my childhood.

Hi Russel, my energy comes from coffee, I think.

We have freight trains up in my part of the country.  My husband loves the sound of the engines, really big engines.  He likes the rumble so much that when we're driving and a train goes by, he rolls down the window and smiles like a little kid.

Russel - I think every boy liked trains while growing up. They still marvel me.

I love trains.  Where I grew up we had train track behind our house.  I used to love to get up on a chair and waive to the caboose man!  He had a latern and would waive back!  Later, my dad would take the whole family on the train from Okla to California to visit relatives!  I loved those trips and still think train is a great way to travel.  It was a great adventure and I loved the food... much better than plane food!  The dome car was my favorite.  We would sit up there half the night looking at the country side and singing folks songs... talking with people from all over the US and sharing stories.  It was the "old social networking" ..  PRICELESS!
