Spring is my absolute favorite time of year in LA because the jacarandas are blooming, showcasing their gorgeous purple flowers all over town. I just love walking down streets like this one in my neighborhood at this time of year.

Jacarandas in Bloom

Towards the end of the blooming season, however, trees tend to get sparser and most of those purple blooms end up on the lawns and driveways of their owners. In fact today on my morning walk I spotted many a lawn completely covered with fallen flowers. Loving the jacaranda as I do, I happen to think of this carpet of purple on the lawn as beautiful, though perhaps a bit melancholy as it marks the end of my favorite season. However, today I began to think about it from a home buyer’s perspective.

Yes, I took at long look at the Jacaranda trees I pass on my way to work--I know I'll have to keep the picture in my mind's eye until next spring.  They are so gloriously beautiful it is worth the wait.

Norma, so true! I wait for this time each year. This year they bloomed quite late actually. But yes it was worth the wait. :)

The Jacaranda's are my favorite too!  We had one in my front where I grew up in the valley.  Thanks for sharing and for the memories! Oh-gosh!  Excited to see you soon!!

What an interesting photo, it almost looks like the trees are colored. I didn't know they bloomed, very pretty!

Cathy, glad to bring back the memories! The kids & I are excited for our visit.

Cindy, yes they are truly breathtaking, especially all in a row like that.

What a great post ~ The fallen flowers would till lay a beautiful carpet on the ground....for a day or two... But you're right, to potential buyers the "clean up" might look to them like shoveling snow. Esp. berry & fruit trees.

My brother-in-law will look a huge maple tree in someone's front yard and immediately think "what about all those leaves to rake up in the fall" - I think about "what a great tree to have in the front of my house - budding in the spring, providing shade in the summer (for all my hostas and periwinkle), colour in the fall and catching snowflakes in the winter."

Thanks Connie. Yes, equivalent to shoveling snow for those people who don't live in LA! Southern Californians would never even THINK of shoveling snow!! :)

Vivian, it was your BIL I was thinking about when I wrote this blog post. ;)

Annie, Those trees are absolutely gorgous!  I have a bush that blooms once a year....the blooms last not more then a week and 1/2 but when it is in bloom, it's absolutely spectacular...so are these trees.

Allegra, thanks so much!

Carole, yes they are. My favorite part of spring.

What beautiful trees Annie!  I have never seen anything like them.  I will say though that I hate raking, but my favorite season is the fall when all of the leaves change color!  Thanks for sharing!

Sheila, I know! My hubby & I are going leaf-peeping for our 10 yr anniversary in Vermont and I can't wait to see the leaves change!

Your spring sounds like ours.   We have few of those trees but we do have beautiful magnolias, crab apple and fruit trees.

Virginia, I LOVE magnolias. I have a gorgeous one in my backyard. Once again, when the leaves drop it's a mess but when it's in bloom it is beautiful.

Annie,

Yes,  Flowering trees and bushes can be really beautiful.  I see you are going to Vermont in the fall to see the colors.  I recommend taking a drive down the Kancamagus highway in New Hampsire. It's way out in the forest, going along a gorgeous Swift river.  It's the best spot in all of new England.  Take it all the way to Mount Washington, stop for lunch there or in Conway, then drive back.  Lot's of hiking, animals, trees, waterfalls, wow....
