My afternoon inspection today was over in North Park, just a couple of blocks from the San Diego Zoo.
That, of course, meant that if I finished the inspection at the beginning of rush hour, it would be a good time to sneak into the zoo with my new camera and take some pictures.
As luck would have it, I finished the inspection a little late, which meant that rush hour was in full swing. Since the Zoo is open late during the summer time, off I went!
Although I took 187 pictures in just one hour, I'm just sharing four right now of this little Caribbean Flamingo since it's just too precious to hold back.
Great pictures... of a great zoo. In St. Louis, we have one of the only free zoos in the country. I love that it is within walking distance of my home and never miss an opportunity to visit the zoo. There is something about seeing the animals that brings out the kid in me.
Hey, Tammy - Its legs will turn pink, as will its feathers. The pink color comes from the food they eat in their natural habitat. The San Diego Zoo was a leader in research in determining what kind of food to feed them in the Zoo to get that gorgeous color.
Hey, Kathleen - Yeah, white with those black legs. Not the flamingo that I've come to know and love - LOL.
Hey, Liz - Give this little one another year and it will be all pretty and pink for you.
Hey, Monika - Most zoos have the Caribbean flamingo, which is what this little fellow is. The Chilean flamingos aren't quite as pink, or coral colored. I suspect being as close to the Caribbean as you are, you have the Caribbean flamingos in the wild, but your zoo just might have the Chilean flamingos.
Hey, Karen - I've got so many pictures to share I'm all tuckered out trying to classify them. Stay tuned, though.
Hey, Dona - I'm not so sure it was an investment, but it sure is fun.
Hey, Ryan - Maybe it was you who told me previously that the St. Louis Zoo was free. That's just not fair. LOL. I have an annual membership to the Zoo and Wild Animal Park here ($129), so I can stop by any time and zip in, check on just one or two things, and zip out again without feeling like I needed to stay longer in order to get my money's worth. Regular day tickets are something like $40, but an annual membership for someone like me is well worthwhile to get into the Zoo and the Wild Animal Park free whenever I'm in the area.
Hey, Jennifer -- I'd always rather park the car and do something during rush hour traffic than actually sit in the rush hour traffic wasting time and gas.
Russel, those are great! It looks like a cotton ball with long legs. What a tremendous resource the San Diego Zoo is! We need to get back and visit it again, we were there about 3 1/2 years ago, and loved it!
Russell, I used to live in Flamingo, FL and occasionally we would see these beautiful creatures in the wild! In the 5 years that I lived there, I never saw a baby, Thanks for sharing, and how wonderful that you can just stop in at the San Diego Zoo after work, I'm JEALOUS!
Wow Russell this is great. I have never ever seen a little one! Thanks a bunch for sharing. And what a great idea to sneak into the zoo to miss traffic. I've done that before but never thought about going to the zoo. Now I will!!
Awwww. they are so adorable. I am planning on taking my boys to the Denver zoo this weekend (of course hoping to take some pics for a post or two - lol). ~Rita
Hi Russel, what a fluff ball this little one is. Funny how its legs appear almost a little chubby just like human babies (well, ok, I know, it's late tonight for me)

How sweet. Now I have to go look that bird up on the Internet to see if it is going to stay white or turn pink like the ones I've seen before.
