We all like to save money - right!  Sure, and when it's stuff for our computers we feel like we hit the motherload :-)  And it doesn't get any better than FREE!!!

After the 30 day free trial of SnagIt I was snagged hooked, but didn't want to cough up $50 and couldn't find any current discounts.  JING is the result of searching for a cheaper alternative, and what a nice surprise to find such a terrific program at such a terrific price - FREE!!!  By way of demonstration the screenshots which follow were taken with JING.

So on this thankful Thursday, I give you JING, go forth and capture to your heart's content.  Brought to you by Gail MacMillan....saving you money on Active|Rain :-)

Gail,

Great minds think alike. I too downloaded SnagIt a month ago and haven't bought it yet. I've just downloaded Jing so I'll give it a try. Interesting, Jing is made by the same company that makes SnagIt.

Morning Toula....I'm amazed at some of the FREE software we find online.  This was a real find, hope you enjoy it.

Hi Rich....Snagit used to cost $30, then $40, now $50.  There were coupons available up until just recently, so it kinda irked me to pay the going rate + pay for upgrades (if desired).  Jing does everything I need for now.  I think you'll be impressed.

Hi Harry...You're very welcome.  I didn't mention, but you add text, arrows and highlighting too :-)

Gail...

I've found SnagIt a difficult program. I like things simple stupid. Can't wait to test out Jing with the hopes I don't get all confused trying to use it :)

Morning Russell....the learning curve for Jing is quite small, so your time investment is minimal.  You save the screenshots as .png and upload as needed.  As to WW, there are so many photo sites now that I can't (don't want to) post to all.  One or two a week is plenty, plus it is quite time consuming.  As for being busy, I'm as busy as I selectively choose to be :-)

Hi Mike....what problems are you finding?  At first I didn't get the saving .png part and was making it more complicated than needed.  If I can help, let me know.

Hi Charlie....did you read that it's incompatible with Windows 2000?  I tend to ignore pronouncements like that and go for it anyway.  If it doesn't work out, just to a system restore to before you downloaded.  OK - so I'm not weak of heart...LOL  Let me know if you do and if it works out.

Hi Michael....You are very welcome and will be pleased with the program as well.  WOW - a feature, thank you to the person(s) who recommended this post....much appreciated :-)

Gail - This is a very valuable post!  By the way, there is another little secret for doing a screen captures, if you don't already know.  You can hit "Alt" + "Print Screen" on your keyboard, and it will copy the screen.  You can paste into a document , Excel, or Paint Shop Pro, by hitting "Cntrl V" on your keyboard.  You can edit the images with your photo editor.

Jing is free and has some great features and some different features than Snag it.

But Snag it has way different features, there is so much more than screen capture. It is well worth the $50. I have a rule in my life; if it saves me time it is worth the money because my time is worth way more than money. I can always make money, money comes and goes constantly but I can NEVER get back the time I have spent.

I blog so much and snag it saves me loads of time and makes my post look very visually appealing with all kinds of things like torn corners, arrows, text balloons, highlighting and so much more. It will also do what Picnic does in embellishing your photos for added impact. The list goes on and on.

For those of us reading who are using Macs, and thinking that JING sounds cool... Don't feel "left out"  you already have the ability to do this... for free.

Press Command-shift-4, which will bring up a cross-hair.  Drag the crosshairs from corner-to-corner covering the area you want to "snapshot", and it will created a file called Picture1.png on your desktop.  That is your screenshot... you may now import it into AR.

Morning Patricia....I'm happy you find this helpful, I'm sure you will be very pleased with your FREE purchase.

Hi Katerina...You're right Snagit is a one-time fee of $50 unless you want to purchase the upgrades which are running $25 when they become available.  Sometimes it's not just about the money, it's about not paying for features you don't need.  You do an awesome job with your posts so Snagit makes great sense for you.  I think if most of us felt we really needed it, the $50 would not be a big deal.

Hi Wendy...I also use two monitors and it's not a problem.  When you line up the cross-hair, just drag it until you've captured exactly what you want, hit the capture button and save.

Hi Sharon...that would be terrific then you can let us know some of the differences.  I only used Snagit for 30 days and didn't use it that much.  I think the ability to color text was very nice and quicker than using html.

I didn't go through all 70 comments so I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but Jing is a side project of TechSmith which is the company that also makes SnagIt. Much of the same technology exists in both applications. It's worth the $14.95 for the pro version. The ability to save the screen capture in a variety of formats including .png files (lightweight & render well) is key.

I'm befuddled by the number of posts 'wondering' if something like Jing was out there to solve past computer needs. It makes me think that agent 'search' skills are seriously lacking. C'mon folks, get on google and do a little looking around. You won't hurt anything and will often end up discovering these little nuggets for yourself. ~ JB

I am a "FREE SOFTWARE SAVANT!" and I like this one. I seems like a good way to send a virtual tour over to someone inquiring about a listing. Or even showing your clients how to use some of the tools that are sent to them; just ad a video tutorial for each (that you'll only have to make once) and you will never have to type out long instructions again.

I just realized: my dad will never have to bring his computer over to my house again either!!!

Gail...

I just had to give Jing the boot. TechSmith (the program provider) buried a bunch of crap in my p.c. As much as I enjoy crap, I draw a line when it comes to using my p.c. as a dump :)

Hi TLW....if you circle back here let us know what you found dumped onto your system.  I've had Jing on for about 2 weeks and have not found any spyware or adware.  I do monitor pretty aggressively for these and block a lot of cookies manually, so I would be curious what you're seeing.  Thanks

Thanks so much for sharing, Gail.  Looks like a great program and the price can't be beat!  I'll be checking it out soon.

Hi Jami....until you use a customizable program for screen capture you have not idea how useful it is.  If Jing were not free I would have ka-chinged it up for SnagIt...LOL

Hi Brandy....I know your comment shows #104, but because of having to delete SPAM you are really #100.  Your prize is just a big old
