Ocean Beach, affectionately known locally as OB (no initials), is a neighborhood within the San Diego city limits, only about five miles north of downtown San Diego. It likes to call itself an "unpretentions beach community," being a fairly liberal community in the heart of a fairly conservative city. Shops are still locally owned and managed, although a Starbucks moved in several years ago, causing quite a controversy.
Along with the morning marine layer of clouds followed by the afternoon sun, there are jet airplanes roaring overhead after taking off from San Diego International Airport, military helicopters doing an occasional fly-by, dogs playing and barking at Dog Beach where dogs can roam off leash in the sand and surf, waves pounding the rocks and cliffs at Sunset Cliffs, and the federal- and state-protected nesting area of the endangered California least tern. If it gets too cold, day or night, you can always have a beach fire in one of the specially built concrete fire pits.
The Ocean Beach pier, at 1,971 feet long, is the longest pier on the West Coast. At the end of the pier is the Ocean Beach Cafe, and at any given time on any given day, the pier is full of fisherpeople and seagulls.
The water near the pier is one of the prime surfing spots in San Diego County, with twenty or more surfers riding the waves even on the rare cloudy, rainy day. You don't have to worry about surfers and swimmers colliding because the water is marked for safety.
Lifeguards are on duty, and there are restroom facilities as well as indoor and outdoor showers.
Downtown Ocean Beach, along Newport Avenue, is one of the most active beach areas in San Diego County, both day and night, with great food and great bars. Halloween and New Year's Eve are almost religious holidays, and you surely don't want to miss the annual OB Chili Cook-off, Christmas Parade, the Fourth of July fireworks show.
