My dog, Mikey, is getting better.  He got a bad case of heart worm disease while in Mississippi - the veterinarian here in Mesquite NV did not even know how to treat it - we don't get that here.  So Mikey is going through "the treatment", which is mainly shots of arsenic.  He is 10 years old this summer and has been through a lot in his little life - including stitches and 15 staples when two Rottweilers were fighting over him - for their lunch.

Funny how much you can love a little animal!  Funny how he knows that he won't get in trouble for squishing my flowers that I work so hard to keep blooming in this desert heat. :)

Mikey - relaxing in the garden

Virginia,

Your Mikey is very cute. You both have fun with the flowers, each in your own way. And what a nicely shot photo!

Virginia, That is so sad and he does look a little weary from his illness. I wouldsay you were so luck to find out what was wrong with the poor little guy early enough to get him treatment.

I'm glad he is doing better, and why wouldn't he sit there, you have made it look so inviting.

Jon - he actually enjoys them more than I do.  :)

Mary - he has some really bad days - he is on steroids and pain pills - but I think he is going to come out of it.

Jason - the little guy has no guilt issues at all.

Chris - before he got sick, he would try to climb trees.  He doesn't know he is a dog - we were going to wait till he got older to tell him and never did.

Lou - I am spoiling him rotten.  Good luck to you too!

Debra - we told him to write a book, people think a dog's life is always glorious.  :)

Todd - he thinks everything is his!

Arsenic? Wow. I would have thought Hartz heartworm pills would do the trick.

No, Russel, the Heartgard pills are a preventative - they kill the larvae of the adult worms which float around in the dog's blood until a mosquito bites the infected dog, the larvae have to stay in the mosquito for 2 weeks, then the mosquito bites the same dog or another.  Now the dog is infected with heartworms that can grow.

Mikey was on heartworm pills, but they don't kill the adult worms that he got during a period when he wasn't on Heartguard.  So they grew and grew.  It is a horrible thing for a dog to get.  We don't get it here because we have no mosquitos to speak of.

Virginia, so sorry to hear about Mikey's problem with heartworms!  They are nasty in this area - I buy the Heartguard.  But last year I missed a few months and was sweating it out for about 6 months!   Glad to say my little guy is fine.  I hope Mikey's treatment is about done!

April - The treatment is so harsh, I am glad your dog didn't get it.  Mikey is done with the shots, now we are just waiting for the results to work through his system.

Hi Gary - Thanks, he has about 2 more critical weeks, then he should be OK - I spend a lot of time with him and don't leave him alone for very long.  I haven't had to take him with me on any appointments, yet.  :)

What a sweetie.  I have a yorkie about Mikey's age, he looks tired but still spunky!  I agree, truly amazing how much we can love these little animals!

Godd to hear Mikey is doing better. My dog Chanel means the world to me too. She's curled up beside me as I type this. I haven't had her on Heartguard she's always inside except to do business. We had a scare last year and she almost died. I even vetoed giving her shots this year so her system would not be compromised. Her little kidneys were barely working after poisioning from rawhide chew bones(I think from China). It's funny how the world just isn't right without them around every day.

What a sweet picture of Mikey!  I bet he's OK now.  We went through that too, and as long as you keep them contained they get better.  I had never heard of hearworm before we moved to the islands.

Hey, Lizette - I was pretty worried about him - still worry, he has some heart damage, but its acting like a puppy again, and I am spoiling him rotten!

Georgina - Yes he is over it - that arsenic treatment is pretty rough on them, he is about as healthy as he ever was.
