Barn Garage

There are basically three kinds of garages...

  1. Places to store stuff
  2. Places to work on stuff
  3. Places to display stuff

Most garages are storage sheds. They hold tools, lawn mowers, cars, sporting goods, cleaning supplies and overflow food in the chest freezer.

The next most common group are working garages. Whether it is building a hot rod or keeping the family rides in tune, they have tools and parts and more tools.

Finally, there are the showplaces. These are less garage and more gallery of mobile art. And some of them are incredible. They are limited only by imagination and budget... and some are limited much at all.

I'd love to have one of each...

But what makes it inspirational?

I would say that what makes it inspirational is as different as the person that is inspired. For me, a garage that allows me to get dirty and throw some sparks is what inspires me. While I would love to have an incredible showroom for a bunch of cool toys, I love to get out there and weld and grind and paint and wrench. I like not having to worry about dropping a wrench on the floor and chipping the marble or scarring the textured walls.

But, for others, having someplace that looks like a stable to house their prancing horses or a full-on NASCAR shop is their dream, with checkerboard tiling and powder-coated tool benches.

The first step... Figure out what you want. Are you going to store, build or display?

The second step... Decide on your style. Do you like acid-etched, polished concrete? Epoxy Coatings? Powder-coated cabinetry? Stained wood cabinets?

The third step... Make a budget.

The fourth step... Make a plan. Even with a modest budget, there are ways to minimize the out-lay while maximizing the impact. Like Craigslist... Discarded kitchen cabinets are a great way to add attractive storage to the garage. And everything doesn't need to be done at once, it can be done in stages.

The fifth step... Pull it all together.

A couple of tips...

  • If you are going to work in the garage, put anything on the floor on wheels. If it is mobile, you can move it to clean behind it.
  • If it isn't on wheels, get it off the floor. If it is off the floor, you can sweep and/or hose under it. Wall mounted cabinetry is very cool.
  • Floor coatings don't stand up to welding and plasma cutting. Stick with polished or acid-etched concrete.

Oh how true about getting out there and enjoying. Don't forget the great stereo, and the refrigerator.

I finally reconciled with the self that my garage was never going to have a car in it.  I  had shelves built to line the side and one-hald of the back and now need to make the other side match with shelves, but alas, my funds have rune out.    Thus my dream garage is one with shelves on on both sides of the garage!

Great topic. It's so neat to see someone talk about the garage, since it's a huge issue. In Toronto,Canada, with snowy winters, everyone wants the car in the garage, but since we all have so much stuff...we have the evolution of "the shed". And now all the men talk about their sheds!!!  There's even songs written about sheds.  In the maritime provinces it's called "shedology". In our sale agreements, it's priority to include "the shed". Go figure.

Oh, goodness. I always thought that a garage was a place to park your car and be assured that it was safe. You are right, though - people do use garages for more than that. I'm so glad I have a shed, so when I do build my garage, I can use it for its intended purpose...

In Oklahoma above a certain price range, usually about $180K in new homes, you must build using a three car garage. Got to have extra room for the kids bikes, the Harleys, and stuff you haven't thown away but should since college.

Lane - what a great conversation!  Your dream garages are larger than most  homes I see!  I like your #3 - budget.  That usually puts things in proper perspective!  congratulations on the shiny new Shiny new star!  Is there a place to hang it in your garage?

Lane - what a fun post. Many folks give little thought to their garages, as no more than storage and room to hide all the junk we don't want in the house. The garage for many is no longer a home for the car. I have seen some amazing garages where one could, literally, eat on the floor. There are growing numbers of companies here as well that cater to making the garage a showplace - heat, AC, stereo, and pretty much what you would have inside your home. There is a condo in Pacific Beach with a lift in the 2-car garage to turn it into a 4-car storage facility. The link was fun - thanks for sharing.

What a cool and different post.  I think that garages make great hang out joints when the car isn't in there...some music and AC/heat and it's all good!

Lane, another thing that makes a garage cool is getting that anti-oil painted coating on the floor. Also adding many cabinets and keeping it clean. You can do a lot with a garage if you think about it. A friend of mine uses his garage for Super Bowl parties in February and projects the game on TV on the wall while we all drink from a keg of beer. Cool!!!

Mine is a workshop for my 19 year old son. All 3 bays just full of car parts, rebuilding an Eclipse DSM from the ground up. He has until snow to get it done, then we need to put the cars back where they belong.

It seems like I never have enough space to just park my car out of the weather. The rest of it is just a plus.

Lane. A friend of mine just cleared his garage out and sealed the floors. Now it actually looks nice...like a play room.

Lane...great post! In my previous life, I had visons of a 3 car detached garage with an adjoining pool house that opened up to the pool.

In the garage, so clean you could eat off the floor was my collection of Lincoln Dealer Catalogs and other memorbilia and my Matchbox car collection.

And, there was the '69 Lincoln 4 Door, the 1972 Linclon Mark IV and my 69 Buick Wildcat Convertible.

We won't even discuss how this story is never going to end.....

Thanks guys.  I appreciate all of the comments.  I read them on my phone while we camped in FL.  And thanks for recommending my post for a feature.

We have pole barns here in Michigan - for the toys and "Stuff" - in addition to garages.  My garage is detached and in the winter can hold 2 cars but come spring my husband takes it over to work on things.  It inspires me to stay away:)

Ed - you don't look like an "Ed"...  We have pole barns here too... but some of the golf course communities don't allow them...  ;^ )
