To Bee or not To Bee.... that is the question!

“Variety's the very spice of life, That gives it all its flavor." ...William Cowper

Have really found myself fascinated by the flurry of activity around Chris Brogan, Social Media Rockstar Extraordinaire, deleting his Facebook Fan Page & Tweeting that he did so because it's "NOT ABOUT ME!"

The message in and of itself, is thought provoking and does make me consider thinking about the quality of my tweets, posts, blogs, and messages on Facebook.  I do want to offer value to the online community.  However, I think some people also take this somewhat "robotic" stance a little too far as well.  Social Media is "Social."  You do need to be, or "Bee" as I often joke online.

As someone who is recovering from trying to be, who everyone else wanted me to be, I now take joy in this quote from Virginia Satir, American & Psychologist (1916-1988).

“I am Me. In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. Everything that comes out of me is authentically mine, because I alone chose it -- I own everything about me: my body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions, whether they be to others or myself."

So yes, social media is about providing value to your community, but you do need to be "you."  I won't let anyone ever again tell me, who I should or should not be, online or otherwise.

By sharing who I authentically "I" am, in essence, it is about me, and attracting people who have personalities, thoughts, issues, desires, like mine.  That's how we bond. I want to hear about you. And hopefully you want to hear about me. That is what makes it a "community" and not just a broadcast system. As Jeff Turner (@ResPres) always says, it is about YEO = "You engaging others."  But I do believe you need to share who you are in that.....

The Law of Attraction is out there Chris Brogan, whether or not, you have a Facebook "Fan" page or not.  So my analysis is you want to attract people who stir controversy, are critical deep thinkers, and who ruffles feathers. Hey, I am not criticizing you, it's who you are.  And I applaud you for making us all think about that a little more. But I CHOOSE to attract people who share their love of life, animals, and family, like "I" do.

I say, celebrate our differences, and make our own choices. I respect your right to be more "closed off" and not make it about yourself, but I celebrate who I am and the things that matter most to me. That is the spice of life afterall. We all just all gotta "bee..."

Bee-ing who you are is what  makes us all unique. Great message and the pics are cute  also.

I am totally confused by pages and profiles on Facebook... Social media rockstar Chris Brogan was in Central Ohio earlier this week.  I chose not to attend the event and I missed the whole thing about his Facebook fan page.... I follow him on Twitter, have read his blog a few times. Not sure I ever saw his fan page....

You gotta bee who you are.  I love your bees.

I wouldn't have gotten to know YOU if you spent all your time making it about everyone else.  I think you do this "social thing" just right and I'd have really missed out if I hadn't met you!  (((HUGS!!)))

OMGosh.  And I am a big sap.  Sarah Cooper you just made me cry.  I would have so missed out on knowing you too, if you weren't an open loving person.

Those that choose to miss out on that.... well, I feel for them.

Thanks John & Maureen for your comments too. We all are, who we are... And I don't thing any expert should tell you who you should be.  That's for sure.  Different strokes...

First, I have to say I'm not a Facebook fan but I am there because I am in the minority and at the least enjoy a presence there as I pick up information I might not have seen otherwise. I gave in to a Fan page for Horsealicious, but I think the name - Fan page - is ridiculous.

Regarding Chris Brogan's post (and I speak for myself as I try to read and keep up with everything he does as he is REAL IMHO), Chris is a thought provoker but not a manipulator. And he is an immensely generous and brilliant soul.

We can't engage without being ourselves! XXOO

Or as I love to say... Let 'er buck!

I agree with you too Susie.  And I think it was a great thought provoker, regardless which side of the coin you fall on.

And you are right about that name, "Fan" Page...  maybe "Branded" Page or "Biz" Page or something else, but the name "fan" does kind of imply an ego thing.  But the concept ,to separate a little more your biz intentions from your personal page, I think in and of itself, is a good idea. Just my 2 cents.

Lori - You hit the nail on the head.  I always thought that this whole social networking thing was about getting to know the person a little so that you could decide if you wanted to know them better.  And from there ... if you wanted to do business with them, socialize with them, or just keep it 'electronic' in nature.

I'm a 'what you see is what you get' kind of person.  And I'm not for everybody.  But that's ok - because not everyone is my cup of tea either.  :)
