Recently a call came from a prospective first time buyer who had some questions. They were interviewing agents to see who might be able to help them by a home. As with most agents I always look forward to the opportunity to work with a new buyer and so I was more than happy to answer their questions and send them my first time home buyers guide.
The questions were going along well and then one came that had me stymied.
"How many clients have you served during your real estate career?"
At first I tried to quickly come up with a number that would seem plausible and realistic but my brain just couldn't wrap itself around the question. It isn't a question that I had been asked before. I couldn't tell you whether it was 100, 1000 or one million (okay I know it isn't one million).
Instead I responded "You know I've never stopped and counted my clients. I've never thought of my clients as a number but instead individuals who need my assistance in buying or selling a home."
It must have been the right answer as we are going out tonight to look at a few homes. How often do we try and impress a buyer with our sales numbers only to realize that what they want is to be treated as a individual and not another statistic?
Personally I'll continue to focus on my clients and not on bragging about being #1 in the market or having handled a million clients. The only client that counts is the one in front of me right now.
