Clinics
MDA clinics offer an interdisciplinary team approach toward diagnosis and follow-up care. Individuals affected by any of the disorders in MDA's program have access to a nationwide network of 230 clinics staffed by top health professionals. These experts advise on all aspects of neuromuscular disease management. In Western Washington, MDA provides clinical services at University of Washington Medical Center and Children's Hospital. Call the MDA office at (206) 283-2183 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Support Groups
In Western Washington, MDA offers an ALS Support Group and a general Neuromuscular Support Group. The ALS support group is held on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00AM - 12:00 noon at the Everett Senior Center in Everett, Washington. The general Neuromuscular Support Group is held on the first Monday of each month from 4:00PM - 5:30PM at the University of Washington Medical Center. All MDA clients, family members and caregivers are always welcome to attend.

Summer Camp
For youngsters with a neuromuscular disease, MDA camp is a magical place offering a wide range of activities specially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. In King County, Summer Camp 2007 will be held July 29th through August 4th, at Camp Waskowitz in North Bend,Washington. For the MDA kids, Summer Camp will remain the best week of the year! At MDA camp there's always a need for: Volunteer counselors, Medical Staff, and Activity coordinators. We would be pleased to answer any questions you may have about MDA summer camp volunteer and sponsorship opportunities. For more information, please call Chelsea Page at (206) 283-2183, ext. 209

Other Services
MDA assists with purchase and repair of wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices prescribed by MDA clinic physicians. Those served by MDA receive up-to-date, helpful information about the Association's research information, the Association's research progress, and other topics related to living with a neuromuscular disease. MDA's local offices also refer those they serve to other community resources that can be of assistance. E-mail us at seattledistrict@mdausa.org for more information.

Research
MDA funds some 400 research investigations by top scientist worldwide, including projects at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. As the world's leading private supporter in the search for causes and cures and treatments for neuromuscular diseases, MDA has identified dozens of genes that, when defective, lead to specific neuromuscular disorders. The Association is developing and testing potential treatments in gene therapy, stem cells, drug therapies and other medical avenues.

Health Education
In Northwest Washington, MDA service seminars are held several times each year in order to acquaint individuals and their families with MDA medical services, research and community resources. Prominent MDA researchers and medical experts in neurology, genetics, rehabilitation medicine, pediatric neurology and electromyography appear regularly at these seminars, including: Thomas Bird, Michael Weiss, Jane Distad, Thomas Hecht, Jay Han, George Kraft, Greg Carter, Philip Chance, Majeed Al-Mateen, Kenneth Jaffe, Ross Hays and Terry Massagli.

Telethon
The annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon is MDA's best-known means of raising funds and educating the community about neuromuscular disorders. MDA's Telethon is the most successful televised fund-raising special in history. In Northwest Washington, it's broadcast for 9 hours on Labor Day weekend on KCPQ-13, Fox, one of 200 stations in MDA's Telethon "Love Network." If you would like to sponsor a segment on the local telethon please contact Jean Allenbach, District Director, jallenbach@mdausa.org or 206-283-2183. Sponsorships range from $3,000-$10,000.

Volunteers
Volunteers are the lifeblood of MDA. They help in a number of ways - answering phones at the Telethon, assisting at MDA summer camp, doing office work, public speaking and assisting with major fund-raisers. Anyone can volunteer and everyone is appreciated.
