A couple of years ago we never even heard of the Portuguese Water Dog until we met our new neighbours next to our cottage who had just moved in.  No little kids could be seen but suddenly a bouncing ball of wool came bounding over to meet us.  This was our first time seeing a Portuguese Water Dog (Isabella, Bella for short).

If you want to know all the technical stuff about the breed you can check with wikipedia or read on.  Bella is one of the smartest dogs we know.  We could be just arriving at the cottage, haven't even emptied our hands and Bella is at the door.  We guess the doggie treats have something to do with it.

Bella comes to visit 5 or 6 times a day.  Grabs a treat, plops down for a snooze and sometimes an hour will go by and we forgot Bella was still here.  Oh well, Jerry and Sabina (Bella's owners) always know where to look for her.

Bella loves to play fetch, including jumping into the lake, swimming 40-50 feet out to get whatever we tossed out.  She's friendly, smart, obedient and does not have a mean bone in her body.

It's no wonder that President Obama made the decision to get a Portuguese Water Dog.

The best part, it's like having your own doggie but we don't have to pay to feed or groom her and Jerry is out there everyday doing the scooping.

So if you are considering to get a new dog (friend/companion) put the Portuguese Water Dog on your short list.  We heard they are expensive, but as in any good stock or house purchase the return you will get will far out weigh your investment.

Well, here's Bella...

Hoped you liked out little story about Bella, she didn't get to see this, she took her cookie and left.

Ella, from all our experiences with our neighbours dog "Bella", we have never seen her hyper. We have seen her with other dogs, strange people etc. and she always takes everything in stride.  You know, we have Siamese cats and before we got them, people told us we would be sorry because they are high strung. Not so.  These two guys are so great.  Maybe the personality is a reflection of the Owners?  Love Terrriers too.

She is lovely, as are all dogs.  I was tempted to get an Irish Water Spanial but there wern't any at the shelters (might mean they're better than I thought if they're not abandoned!)  They are very similar to the Portuguese Water Dog.  There are rescue organizations for almost every breed so check them out first . . . http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/retrievers/pwd_rescue.htm

Great post Al about an obvious great little Bella -  stop reading and go get her a cookie!!

Very cute, she has you "pegged".  I am partial to Old English Sheepdogs myself, I have adopted one that I recently had to put to sleep and am searching for another rescue dog.  There are so many good pets out there that need homes.

Bella is a beauty! And you are right, you have the best of her. The only problem I can see is keeping them out of the muddy waters here.

Hi Susan!  You are right forget getting her cookies, we have to go buy her some.  She knows exactly where we keep them and she is so thoughtful, she takes them to the mat at the door to eat them!

Oh Terry, love the sad eyes of a beagle, but they are only spoofing us right, cuz they are such happy dogs!

Hey Christine, old Sheepdogs, beautiful!  Sorry to hear about your loss, we lost our little poodle a few years ago.  Think that is why we are so close to Bella today.

Oh and she loves the water Andrea! We just dry her off and send her home!! ;)
