Speechless Sunday - Flag Day June 14th!!

Flag Day celebrated June 14th

Flay Day is celebrated on June 14th.   The day commemorates the adoption of our United States Flag.  This happened on June 14th, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14th as Flag Day.  It was not until August 1949 that National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.  Flag Day is not an official federal holiday but it is a special day to celebrate our United States Flag.

Today the flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with 6 white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.

I think it is especially important to fly a flag when we are at a time of war.  We started flying a flag during the first Gulf War and have pretty much flown a flag since then. We owe so much to all the brave men and women who are serving and have served in our military; protecting our country.  I feel that flying a flag is just one thing we can do to show our patriotism and let them know we are appreciative of everything they do for this wonderful country of ours.

We are blessed this Flag Day to have our son home safe and sound after being in the Army almost 5 years with two deployments to Iraq.  Our son got out of the Army May 2nd and started college June 1st.  What a beautiful flag day we are having!

I hope you also have a beautiful flag day; don't forget to put your flag out.

Marchel,

Thanks for posting this. I didn't get my Flag Day post done as early as I wanted. Our new group "Observances and Celebrations" is perfect for Flag Day and similar posts. :)

TONY, I so agree with you!!  We have a very patriotic cul-de-sac!  Most of us fly our flags 24/7!

ANDREA, Years and years ago my brother in-law dated a gal whose birthday was on Flag Day for some reason I have remembered ever since.  Now I would not know that gal if I saw her but she did make it a memory jogger for me.

ALICE, Thanks!  I have been holding on to that picture for today.  I was trying to get a picture of the flag waving and a gentleman who was there told me I needed to get underneath looking up at the sun.  He watched traffic for me as I took the picture while the police officers directing traffic watched both of us (lol).  What a blessing to have our son home this flag day!

ED, I wrote a tattered flag post quite some time ago.  Seeing tattered flags is a pet peeve of mine and we have so many in our area.  These builders mainly but other companies also put flags out and then never replace them.  I bought a high quality flag the last time and it is holding up much better!

ANN, It is a special flag day indeed.  Next Saturday our son turns 24 and it will be the first time we have had him home for a birthday since he turned 19.  He got his two week leave from Iraq around his 21st birthday and he almost made it home getting here the day after so he was in transit on that birthday.

KONNIE, Thanks!  I could not wait to get home and see if the shot turned out.  I thought it had but you never know on those little pictures on the camera.

TOM, Our cul-de-sac does recognize flag day everyday.  Probably about half of us have flags out 24/7.  You are right though it should be recognized every day!

KAT, Thank you!

STEVE, I joined the group and added my post.  I was having problem finding a fifth place to post so this was PERFECT!

Hi Marchel,

Beautifully done. Glad to hear about you son starting college after his years of service in Iraq.

As for flying a flag, you bet...I had a flag pole put into my front yard, I love it!

Marchel,

I love the flag.  We have a 20 x 30 American flag flying in our parking lot.  When its down we have people calling the office wanting to know where the flag is.  We try and keep it flying most of the time except in the bad weather.

What a beautiful photo of the flag Marchel!  I like the angle of the photo and the light coming in from behind it.

SHIRLEY, I hope your grandson had a wonderful day!

MYRL, Your Mother would be sharing a birthday with Shirley's grandson.

CAROLE,  I replaced my flag with a high quality flag a few years ago and it still is looking very good.  I guess I learned you get what you pay for even with flags.

LYNDA, He is doing GREAT so far!  This summer he is taking math and English.  He is really enjoying math.

CONNIE LOU, That's wonderful that people notice that your flag is missing.

CINDY, He is living at home for a year while he gets his basics and I'm totally enjoying having him home.  He has a very nice girl friend also that I'm enjoying.

KENNETH, What a RELIEF to have him home safe and sound!

CYNTHIA, Thanks!  That was one of those photos where I couldn't wait to get home and see how it looked on the computer.

PATRICIA, I have to admit it was a guy taking a similar picture that prompted me.  I would not have even thought of looking through the flag at the sun.

STEVE, Thanks for featuring my post!  I' honored!

Thank you for the history on Flag Day. As you said, its the LEAST we can do for our brave men and woman who serve our country near and far. I think any picture with our flag flying is awesome.

Along with taking pictures of Mother and Father Nature's flora and fauna, I also like to take pictures of flags for some strange reason.

I can vouch for Russel liking to take pictures of flags. I don't know which we have more of, flag pictures or pictures of Zoey the Cool Cat.
