What is age all about?

In the time that I have been in real estate I have listed and sold many properties.  They have all been different styles and ages and price ranges.  The sellers have been in different age ranges.  And up until this week I have not listed a home that is owned by folks in their 80's.  Now most would think that the interior would be, well you know, dated.  The thought is that seniors are living in the past and can't get out of it.  They don't have any taste, all they like are things that are from the past forget about the now.  This is totally a perception and ill conceived and you will be seeing what I am talking about.  The lady of this home is in her 80's and lives with her husband and now enjoy their retirement and well they should.  I was called out to their home by their daughter to list their home.  I wasn't sure what I was getting into and I will say that I have been totally surprised.  Let me show you the park-like setting in the backyard.

Remember this is a home owned by an 80+ year old couple and the Mrs. takes care of the landscaping.

My thought is that we should drop our preconceived notions that we are going into a particular listing until we get there.  I will have interior pictures in a post later this week.

It is not our physical age but our mental age that makes us old.  If we think that we are old we will act old and when we act old then what is left?

Don - Great landscaping... Although it depends on the individual owner, I was surprised to hear this was a seniors home.  Also, I like you slide gizmo.

Don, age is the feeling in your heart, not the number that we are supposed to fill out on medical forms and such. I have to say, you seller is quite an inspiration:))

Ryan,

Did the master call my widget a GIZMO?  You are right tho, it will take a person that is not afraid of the work, it might scare off some people but I hope not.

Joanna,

You are so right they are a real inspiration.  Age is a feeling of the heart and head I know, My head tells me I can do something and the next thing I know is my body is telling me to slow down just a bit.  LOL

looks like your clients have broken the mold when it comes to older folks. I got a call today from a lady that wants to list her house. She's 100 and that will be a first for me.

Don - It shouldn't scare off anyone.  When we talk about buyers liking the "shiney penny", we are talking about that yard.  Great curb appeal - I love the outdoor living area...

JL,

I would think that listing a persons' home that is a 100 years old would be a first for many, many agents.  Good luck sir.

Good Morning Don.....What a nice event to walk into.  I'll bet you left there feeling quite invigorated as this is what I would call a positive experience.  I'm assuming you got the listing since you got the pics.  Nice job BTW.

Good morning Gail,

This home has the best landscaping that I have ever seen, especially in this price range.  There are those that think that I am joking when I tell them how nice the home is.  I will be posting the listing later today.

Hey, Hey, Heyyyyyyyyy Ms. Leesa,

The Mrs. is always doing something even when she isn't in the yard working.  And you are so right ma'am she is very alert and a sharp wit.  They are a great couple and a real pleasure.

When I was listing homes of people that were retired, I loved it, they had the time to take care of the property and the house itself. I never had to worry about what the house was going to look like for a showing.

People are living longer and longer today and they have a lot more energy than they used to. I think we need to look at people in a different light than we used to.

Good morning George,

I can truthfully say that this is the case with this home all the way from the front yard thru the home to the backyard.
