In Celebration of Flag Day

I believe I was about fifteen years old when I first read this words, they  have been with me ever since. As a naturalized citizen it most clearly captured the ideals & promises of this country which offered all but promised nothing more than opportunities for those who wish to take them. No promises of success but the freedom to try and try again.

"I do not choose to be a common man.

It is my right to be uncommon.

I seek opportunity not security

I do not wish to be a kept citizen humbled and dulled by having the state look after me.

I want to take the calculated risk, to dream and build, to fail and succeed.

I refuse to barter incentive for a dole.

I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence, the thrill of fulfillment to the calm state of utopia.

I will not trade freedom for benevolence, nor my dignity for a handout

I will never cower before any master. Nor bend to any threat.

It is my heritage to stand erect proud and unafraid to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefits of my creations and to face the world boldly, and say:

This I have done."

When my sons were active in scouting there were always ceremonies on June 14th. Each year I display our flag.

Alttle bit of history: The day June 14th was made  a permanent observance in America in 1949 when Congress resolved  "That the 14th day of June of each year is hereby designated as Flag Day"

The first official "Flag Day"  was celebrated in 1877 - the flag's centennial. In 1916, a grass roots movement resulted in President Woodrow Wilson issuing a Proclamation that called for a nationwide observance of Flag Day on June 14.

This was a very good post!  Hint: Try taking out the commas on your tags (flag day, dean, should be: flag day dean -- without commas.  For some reason, it gets picked up on SEO's when the commas aren't used.  I also promote myself and the company in the tags.  I don't care what the topic is it's always: EBA Portland exclusive buyer agent portland beaverton . . . blah, blah, blah.

Because of this post you might also like Thomas Sowell.  He's a scholar and professor at Stanford I read a few of his books a while ago and have been a 'student' (if you will) Here's a link to his favorite quotes, which I like, and you might too!

(My graphic word is: tomatillo -- kinda funny!)

Thanks Carla, appreciate your comments and specially your advise; removing the commas is a great tip, was not aware of it. and will definitely add my company info from now on.

Also, you were right about T. Sowell, I have read some of his books before ["Migration and cultures" comes to mind] I will take a look at the link.

Thanks Again,

Diego
