From NY to NC

As a former New Yorker who moved to the Raleigh area many years ago, some of the things I thought I'd miss about my old stomping grounds were the abundance of museums, cultural activities and great restaurants.

Despite the fact that it took me a little while to find good sushi (we have it now!) and decent pizza (got that too!), the area commonly known as the Triangle has grown into a place where just about anything can be found.

Recently the New York Times (yes, I still read it daily) ran an article in the travel section exposing the happy medium between our "slow paced Southern charm and our urban cool."

36 Hours in Research Triangle, N.C.

Raleigh the City of Oaks

From museums, to great places to have a cold frosty beverage, to places to catch a great band, the article does a wonderful job of giving a glimpse of the Raleigh/ Durham/ Chapel Hill area...and an even better job of reminding me why I moved here in the first place.

I travel a lot and I know that many people I encountered thought that my hometown of Houston was covered with tumbleweeds and cattle. The reality is Houston is the home to many art galleries, symphony, and a little space project called NASA. There are many lovely metropolitan cities all over this great country. The big apple is not the only bastion of civilization. I am glad to see so many exciting and cultural things to do in NC. Kudos!

Craig, it is a beautiful place indeed. Although it has been a few too many years since I have been there, sounds like another trip is in order. Great post, and a great place to live indeed!

Craig,

NC is indeed a beautiful state.  My father was born in Wilmington so we vacationed there many times.  From the beach to the mountain.

Wow, Craig!  That is one of the absolute best articles promoting our area that I have ever seen.  It's impressive that they included active links to our local businesses.  Thanks so much for sharing!  I'm glad you still read the NYT.  It's a pretty good paper overall.

I hadn't seen that "36 hours" article before- it's great. Maybe Rachel Ray will come and show us how to eat all day for under $40 too.  (I think we've managed that!).

Been to the NC Art museum many times- not only great art, but great summer concerts on the lawn. Cat's Cradle is a fun place to see live music. Now I have to start trying out all those restaurants.

Great blog!

Hey, Craig. I have to agree. Maria and I stopped in Raleigh back in 2006 and we were extremely impressed with all there is to do. Way to go, Jim

Southern Charm and Urban Cool!  The article had so many links and information about the triangle area. Congratulations on the write up.  When we went to Greenboro, NC to visit  our daughter, I don't believe we got spend anytime in Raleigh.  But I would love to visit the Triangle - sounds like an exciting part of NC!!

Craig, I bookmarked this....I was just speaking to my daughter yesterday about moving --  to Raleigh!  We were wondering if we could give up all the NYC "Culture" and it seems that we wouldn't be missing much :)  I would love to just pay lower taxes AND have a warmer climate.  Thank you for sharing, it came at a perfect time.
