In our day and age when everyone's personal space is highly valued and guarded, public hugs and kisses are verboten, especially in our school culture...!!!

Yes, gone are the days when teacher and student could exchange innocent hugs like mother and child or father and child...and students could be comforted physically as well as mentally by a caring and reassuring teacher/mentor...

As a child being raised in a typical Italian/American household with several generations living under one roof...touchy feely was easy and practiced freely and routinely...

The same was true in our Catholic School, where loving nuns gathered children around them at recess, and distributed, to many, hugs and warm wishes which further reinforced our home values...!!!

Like most things in our culture that we find outdated, we usually throw out the baby with the bath water...that is, we tend to be an overcompensating culture...

This post isn't going to change hearts, minds, or attitudes, but maybe it will get some of us to begin to reinforce positive values and practices in our homes...

On a recent radio program a study was underlined that asserted that by merely hugging 5 times a day we could become a much happier and fulfilled person...

Since God has given me 9 beautiful children, 5 still living at home, it should be easier for me to get in my 5 hugs...BUT...

You know what...I, like many others, take much for granted...and so many days go buy in which I squander that opportunity and fail to hug a single person...!!! Shame on me!

I am going to resolve today, right now, to at least begin a daily practice of hugging each of my at home children at least once a day...

And if I include my lovely wife, Benita, and our loyal dog, Daisy...that'll give me 7...my favorite number and 2 to spare...!!!

Happy Hugging...!!!

Nice post - a hug a day keeps gloom away!  I think I'll join you in your mission.  Did you see the guy on TV who wandered around America giving away free hugs?  It was quite interesting to see who took him up on his offer.

I was raised in a family that didn't do hugs and I have finally grown used to giving them.  What I missed in my youth.

I agree we are heading towards a sad time when we are afraid to show our feelings. I also grew up in a touchy, feely, hugging home. I raised my boys like that and at 21 and 26 years old they still hugand kiss me and my husband each time we see them. The older one is married and the younger one is away at School. Even when they were in high school we kissed good bye and hello every day. I really think they are more secure in their feelings because they were taught to show their feelings!!I like you will not give up on my quest to make people feel loved.

There is a big difference between showing love and being a pervert!!!

Happy Tuesday!!

Fran,

Great post once again.

I got my degrees in Exercise and Sports Science and Dance. Instead of going the normal course and being a dance team instructor or coach I worked in a hospital doing movement and dance therapy.

For my final choreography I obviously could not bring in the patience I worked with so I had a group of 5 women including my Mother, work with me using the therapies I was using in the hospital to come up with a final dance. This was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

One thing I learned through this experience is the amazing gift of touch when working with women, men, geriatric patience, children and all in the middle. A loving touch, be it a hug or a hand on your shoulder in encouragement can bring a person from complete depression to a place of knowing your are valued and loved. That is one of the ways I was taught to know there is a God and he dwells within all of us.

Have a wonderful hug filled day.

Fran, I also believe in the power of hugs. Sometimes nothing can be better than a simple hug. They are very special. So, hug to you!:)

What a great post, Fran. We just had a memorial service this past Saturday for a dear aunt who passed away, and there certainly was a lot of hugging going on there. Very sad time, but also a reminder of the importance of family and maintaining that connection. And hugging sure helps!

Fran, somebody did a study once that showed you need a minimum of seven hugs a day or you can get hug starvation.  I'm with you on this one.  I think the schools especially have gone way overboard.  So parents need to take up the slack!  Good for you!

Hey Fran...I am part of a family that has never showed 'affection'...I have 4 siblings ( I'm the oldest) and I MIGHT have spoken to each of them once this year and we don't live 30 minutes from one another...I get my hugs from my co-workers but I wish I could share them with my family...It's awful, but it's also been passed on to the next generation and I'm part of the problem...I found myself shaking hands with my daughter the other day and felt terrible afterwards...Thanks for the post, it made me think.

Ernie,

Take the initiative...give the hug first, uncomfortably, then afterwards you'll feel much better...!!! The more you do it, the easier it gets...!!! I promise! Thanks,   Fran

When my wife first met my dad she was freaked out because she was only an employee of mine at the time and he gave her a hug. She came from a family that didn't hug and now she has come around to our way of thinking and hugs all the time. I use the hug on my girls softball team when they do a great job, it always gets a much bigger smile and pride than a high five!
