OK, I was in the office this afternoon and I told the story of my first car. I was the ripe old age of nineteen.  I had just started my first job and all I needed was a car. The hunt was on!  I found a bronze colored hatchback Ford Pinto on a bank repo lot. I called the bank up and bought that car! Gosh, I was "wheeling and dealing" way back then. When I told this story three people in the office chimed in and said, "That was my first car too!"

Do you remember the Ford Pinto?  It was back when American made cars were cheap (or should I say economical) and you never even thought about buying anything made across the ocean. Now jump a couple of years later, I must have been about 20 or so. The news came out that if they were hit in the back they would blow up! That's OK, I just made sure nobody was following ME too closely, yeah right!  I turned that car upside down in a ditch and guess what, it didn't blow up! Hey, I drove that car into the ground and it was the best car deal I have ever had in my life.

Here's a video about the Ford Pinto.  I see my car in this video!

Oh, the memories.

Let me know if the Ford Pinto was your first car!

I even remember the Pinto station wagon......  Actually, it was a really good car unless you got hit from the rear....

Not mine but it was my husbands first. He drove his into the ground also. The best thing was the tires that lasted forever.

Linda, YES I do!! My father was able to get the very first Pinto sold in SC. It was yellow with a black racing stripe down the hood. I guess I must have been 14 or so. The day he got it we loaded up the family. 6 of us!!!! And drove to GA to my grand parents. Every where we stopped on the trip people would gather round to look at the car and this idiot family of 6 unfolding from inside. It was quite the trip.

Tim - Yeah, they were really good cars but you really had to watch your rear!

Alan- LOL, that is so funny!

Kathy - Come to think of it my husband had one too! When we were newlyweds we had two Pintos, his was a peach colored one (can you imagine). I think my bronze one was prettier.

Caron - It's always fun to take a step back in time. Being a repo, mine was second hand too. What a deal I got on that car and I negotiated with the bank! Ha, little did I know it was the beginning of a life-time of the same. My Dad was giving me tips on what to say to get the best deal.

Carl - Yeah that was kinda a "tight" ride in the back of those cars and trucks looked like they were REALLY close or maybe it was just the explosion report that was on your mind.

BB - Your Dad had the first one sold in SC!?! How cool is that? I love it. I can just picture your family unfolding out of that car. LOL

Hi Linda,

I remember people in my neighborhood owning Ford Pintos. My first car was the Pinto's cousin, the AMC Spirit. It was a dark green, two door hatchback. It took me everywhere reliably!

You can only be excused for not remembering the Pinto if you are under 30 years old or your head's been buried in the sand.

Hi Linda, Oh boy, do I remember the Pinto. I knew several people that drove one. My first car was a VW squareback, 4 on the floor. We drove that car into the ground, between me and my 2 sisters.  Thanks for bringing back the memories.
