And let me tell you .. he's a looker ..  and he was also a really nice person!

I run at Saguaro High School track early in the mornings.  I have for years. These folks are consistently at the track with me:

  • Pete - 60s - trying to lose another 40 pounds (yay Pete!);
  • Ken and Vicki - late 50s - trying to lose weight too;
  • Marilyn late 60s - working on her blood pressure and arthritis; and
  • Joe, who has Alzheimer's, with his wife Lois - both in their 80s.

We've had a great time over the years, feel pretty good about ourselves and enjoy our "track group"!

Today, same story.  Only at about 5:30am here HE comes. The new guy - you've seen him before:

  • Clearly - he works out a lot - and then some more
  • Nothing giggles when he runs - you can tell because he runs without a shirt on
  • Perfect hair, classic, tight running shorts - barely breaking a sweat to ruin it
  • He wasn't gasping for air as he ran his 6 minute miles
  • He was a looker and really, he was just too nice to believe

So, the men all stood up straighter, walked a little faster and smiled a little more.  The women, we just smiled and reflected back to our younger years as we wondered, "Who is he?  "Wonder if he has a girlfriend?" (You know they have daughters!)

Once he left, I thought about that "My My My" factor.

And its not just about the way someone looks - but rather the overall way someone carries themselves.

What kind of impression do you leave on people?  Do you look beyond appearances, refrain from making judgments or being jealous of someone's looks or successes? Do you encouraging and help people to be their best? Do you make sure that you are "yourself" instead of trying to be someone you aren't?

The new track guy - he made a very good first impression and then we got to know him a little. He was nice and helpful - and it was genuine: he taught me a trick to run a little faster; he "let" Ken beat him on a mile time; and he helped Lois to her car.

New track guy sparked me to check my "My My My" factor - and pass it on! So check yours - if it needs a little polish - do it!  Make someone smile, help someone, encourage someone - just plain be nice and leave that lasting impression that makes someone want to get to know you and who you are!

As they said in Harry Met Sally ..."I'll Have Some of What She's Having."....Mmmmm sounds like you don't need the running to bring up your heart rate...

I think nice friendly helpful people always stand out from the crowd. I also admire all the people who are up early working out with you.

I was breathing a little hard after the third 6 minute mile, and it took forever to get my hair to lie right this morning (bed head you know), and the running shorts were causing a wedgie every now and then. I'm glad I ran at the high school this morning on my way through Tucson!!!

First impressions do mean a great deal to people. I just closed on a bank owned property with private money. I informed the buyers we will order the appraisal once the house has been cleaned, pool filled, appliances in the house, and landscaping completed. Why? I want the appraiser to say WOW this is a nice house.

Now get back to work and sell real estate. Thanks

Gab, Half the fun and motivation of working out is looking at the other bodies in all the stages of repair. I just look at them with admiration. All these people are trying to improve themselves. Welcome the newbies so they keep coming...

What a great post!  I like the "My My My".  I believe everyone should receive the same about of respect-no matter what they look like.  But sometimes, it is definitely easier to said than done.  Good luck on your running.

HELLO XINH!  I agree!  But it sure is fun to look folks like the new track guy! Thanks for the comment -- Gabrielle

HELLO PAUL!  What a great comment!  There is a girl that, from time to time, comes to the track.  I know it took a lot of hard work to get in the shape she's in - I admire that because I am sure - she doesn't eat chocolate like I do!  As for the rest of us, I applaud everyone who comes to the track early in the morning - that's half the battle right there!  Enjoy your night! -- Gab

HELLO JUDY!  I love it! -- Gab

HELLO SARA!  I agree with you - it's easy to just be nice isn't it?!  Nice to have your input -- Gabrielle

Gabrielle:  I love this blog!  Absolutely delightful and yet provocative, and a great discussion starter.  I love the concept of the "My My My" factor... its not just about the way someone looks - but rather the overall way someone carries themselves."

This is now featured on the Optimist Group.  Great job, Gabrielle!

I am flagging it for an AR Feature.

Lovely!
